After a period of investigation, authorities in Jiangxi province, China concluded that the strange object found in the lunch of students at Jiangxi Polytechnic College in Nanchang city was a rat's head.
The incident began on June 1, 2023, when a student at Jiangxi Industrial Polytechnic College posted a video on Chinese social media complaining about a strange object in the cafeteria that looked like the head of a dead rat.
The male student told the female cafeteria worker, but she insisted that what he saw in his plate of rice was not a rat head but a duck neck.
On June 3, Jiangxi Polytechnic College launched an investigation and stated that the video was filmed on campus, but the object was not a rat head. The school even claimed that students in other classes who witnessed the incident also confirmed that it was a duck neck.

The school’s conclusion further fueled public outrage and disbelief in those explanations. Netizens believe that Jiangxi Polytechnic College is trying to cover up the truth.
"In the past, our grandparents called deer horses, now we call mice ducks" - a netizen commented on Weibo.
The school’s conclusion received a storm of public criticism, prompting local authorities to launch an investigation on June 10. Although surveillance video at the cafeteria showed that staff there threw away the strange object on June 1 after being complained by the male student, experts examined the video and photos of the object and determined that it was a rat head.
The local government later revoked the cafeteria's food business license and imposed the maximum penalty on the cafeteria's operator under China's food safety laws. The local government also announced that Jiangxi Industrial Polytechnic College would also face punishment for its lack of due diligence.
