The Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital ( Quang Ninh province) recently received a case of skin cancer in the nasal area, discovered from a small, seemingly harmless tumor.
The patient presented with a small lump on the side of the nose that had appeared about 3 months ago. The lesion was slow-growing, painless, and did not bleed, so the patient was mainly concerned about the cosmetic aspect.
Upon examination, the doctors noticed an abnormal lesion and ordered a sample to be taken for pathological examination. The results confirmed it was skin cancer in the nasal area.
The patient then underwent surgery to remove the tumor. During the operation, doctors performed immediate tests to assess the boundaries of the lesion and ensure complete removal of cancerous cells. After treatment, the patient was instructed to have regular follow-up appointments to monitor their health.
According to MSc. Dr. Le Thu Trang, Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery, most skin cancers progress slowly and have few symptoms. Initial signs may only be a small, easily bleeding scratch or a persistent lump on the skin.
According to doctors, many cases of facial skin cancer, especially on the nose, are easily mistaken for acne or benign lesions. Although metastasis is rare, the disease can invade surrounding tissues, causing disfigurement and affecting function if detected late.
Experts advise people not to be complacent about skin lesions that are persistent, frequently recurring, rapidly increasing in size, have indistinct boundaries, unusual color, or are prone to ulceration or bleeding. Early examination helps improve treatment effectiveness, minimize invasiveness, and improve aesthetic results for patients.
