In the country's parliamentary elections in September 2024, the Freedom Party became the largest political party in parliament, surpassing even Nehammer's party. According to long-standing political practice, the largest party or coalition in parliament is given priority. However, van der Bellen did not follow this practice, nominating Nehammer to form a government on the grounds that the Freedom Party was far-right. Nehamer's defeat left the Austrian president in a position where he had to either entrust Kickl with forming a government or dissolve parliament to hold new general elections.
Austrian Freedom Party leader Herbert Kickl speaks to the press in Vienna on January 7, 2025.
It remains to be seen whether Kickl will be able to form a new government, but the mere fact that he has been tasked with forming one is enough to show that the far-right, populist, and nationalist factions have officially come to power in Austria, signaling the continued growth of far-right forces in Europe. This will also have a significant impact on the upcoming parliamentary elections and the formation of a new government.
Historically, the Austrian Liberal Party has been involved in governing alongside the Austrian People's Party, but as a smaller partner rather than the ruling party as it does now.
The EU cannot help but be deeply concerned as more and more member states are sinking deeper into the influence of far-right, populist, and nationalist forces, weakening the EU both domestically and internationally and further destabilizing the continent politically.
