A JAL spokesperson said that although one of the pilots had spotted “an object” just before the collision, they did not communicate directly with the captain of the Coast Guard aircraft.

The pilots said they felt a forceful impact for a few seconds as the plane touched down. Initially, the pilots in the cockpit were unaware of the fire until they were alerted by the chief flight attendant and instructed to open the emergency exits.

Two days after the aforementioned aircraft collision, several domestic flights scheduled to arrive at Haneda Airport in Tokyo on January 4th were canceled or delayed.

According to Hokkaido Airports, the airport management company, approximately 200 passengers were stranded overnight at New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido Prefecture, after another group of 256 passengers were stranded from the evening of January 2nd to the morning of January 3rd due to flight cancellations following the unusual collision. Since the evening of January 2nd, Hokkaido Airports has been providing assistance to the passengers, including distributing sleeping bags, blankets, and mattresses.

New Chitose Airport experienced numerous flight cancellations, particularly to Haneda Airport, with 45 flights on January 2nd and 28 on January 3rd. On January 4th, 18 flights from New Chitose Airport to Haneda and several other airports were expected to be cancelled. The collision also caused delays to many flights from Haneda to New Chitose, with some delayed until 3:00 AM on January 4th.

New Chitose Airport serves approximately 400 flights, including about 100 flights to Haneda Airport. Haneda Airport's runway, where the collision occurred on the first working day of the New Year, remains closed. Following the collision, JAL and All Nippon Airways also canceled several domestic flights.

Japanese police said all 379 passengers and crew on board JAL's Airbus A350 flight JL516 were safely evacuated, with no one sustaining life-threatening injuries after the plane caught fire.

In a statement on the afternoon of January 3, officials from Japan's second-largest airline affirmed that strict adherence to emergency procedures helped save all passengers. However, five of the six crew members on board the Japanese Coast Guard aircraft perished. The captain escaped the plane but sustained serious injuries.
