Việt NamViệt Nam31/07/2024

Saigon is a place where many different cultures intersect, including an ancient culture that contributed to the foundation of Saigon in the past - the Chinese people. The Chinese (mainly Chaozhou and Fujian people) have lived in Chinatown District 5 since the 18th century. In the 1950s, 90% of the population was Chinese. Currently, only about 60% of the Chinese continue to settle here. Most of the Chinese in District 5 speak Vietnamese as well as the original Saigonese.
Please join Vietnam.vn to explore the Chinatown in Saigon through the photo series "Chinatown - Saigon" by author Tang Anh Thuan. Coming here, visitors will admire architectural works such as assembly halls, pagodas, ... with Chinese style. In front of each house, red Chinese lanterns are often hung. As for the merchants, the shop signs are inscribed with two unique Vietnamese and Chinese characters. The photo series was submitted by the author to participate in the Photo and Video Contest "Happy Vietnam - Happy Vietnam", organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications .

People in this alley live very close together and in harmony with each other.

A spiritual place worth experiencing.
To this day, the Chinese still retain the cultural, architectural and religious values of hundreds of years ago. The tiled roofs of the Chinese Quarter, along with their distinctive architecture, exude a very classical beauty. Although located in Saigon, Chinatown District 5 always has a very different style in both architecture and cuisine . The houses in Chinatown District 5 are built in the traditional Hong Kong style, with classic colors such as blue, yellow and bright red. In front of the house, red parallel sentences or peace charms are often hung to bring luck and peace to the family. The shops are also named in both Vietnamese and Chinese, which is extremely unique.
