Chinatown - Saigon

Việt NamViệt Nam31/07/2024

Saigon is a melting pot of many different cultures, including one ancient culture that contributed to the foundation of Saigon in the past – the Chinese. The Chinese (mainly from Teochew and Fujian) have lived in the Chinatown area of District 5 from around the 18th century to the present day. In the 1950s, up to 90% of the population there were Chinese. Currently, only about 60% of the Chinese continue to reside there. Most of the Chinese in District 5 speak Vietnamese as well as native Saigonese.
Join Vietnam.vn in exploring Saigon's Chinatown through the photo series "Chinatown - Saigon" by author Tang Anh Thuan. Here, visitors can admire architectural structures such as assembly halls and temples, all distinctly Chinese in style. Red Chinese lanterns are often hung in front of each house. For businesses, the signs uniquely display both Vietnamese and Chinese characters. This photo series was submitted by the author to the "Happy Vietnam" photo and video contest, organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications .

The people in this alley live very close-knit and harmoniously with each other.

A spiritual place worth experiencing.
To this day, the Chinese community still preserves the cultural, architectural, and religious values of hundreds of years ago. The tiled roofs of the houses in the Chinese quarter, along with their distinctive architecture, create a very classic beauty. Although located within Saigon, the Chinese quarter in District 5 always has a very distinct style in both architecture and cuisine . The houses in District 5's Chinese quarter are built in the traditional Hong Kong style, with classic colors such as vibrant blue, yellow, and red. Red couplets or amulets are often hung in front of the houses to bring good luck and peace to the family. The shops are also uniquely named in both Vietnamese and Chinese. In 2024, the "Happy Vietnam" photo and video contest will continue to be organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications in collaboration with the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists on the website.   https://happy.vietnam.vn is open to all Vietnamese citizens and foreigners aged 15 and above.
