The Tien Cong Festival, also known as the "Procession of People" Festival, is held annually from the 5th to the 7th of January at the Tien Cong Temple in Cam La commune, Quang Yen town, Quang Ninh province, to commemorate the Tien Cong figures who contributed to the exploration, reclamation, and establishment of Ha Nam island. The festival was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2017.
Join Vietnam.vn in experiencing this festival through the photo series "The Ancestor Worship Festival (Procession of the Living Ancestor)" by author Vu Tien Cong. The series depicts the beauty of a traditional culture that has existed and been preserved for over three hundred years. Every Lunar New Year, the clans of the coastal area of Ha Nam, Quang Yen town , Quang Ninh province, joyfully organize the Ancestor Worship Festival, also known as the Ancestor Worship Temple Festival. During these days, any family or clan whose ancestor reaches the age of 80, 90, or 100 receives offerings from the family and clan to pay respects to their ancestors at the ancestral temple. The ancestor is then respectfully honored as "Grandfather" and escorted by descendants to the Ancestor Worship Temple for blessings and a solemn celebration of their longevity. This photo series was submitted by the author to the "Happy Vietnam" photo and video contest, organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications .
The ceremony expresses reverence for the Ancestors, reflecting the culture of worshipping the elderly, those blessed with good fortune, and those favored by heaven and earth to live long and healthy lives. Accordingly, elderly people who have reached the ages of 80, 90, and 100 will be seated on a hammock and carried by their children and grandchildren to the temple for the Ancestor worship ceremony. The rituals and ceremonies celebrating "Longevity," "Ceremony for the Living Elder," and the procession of "the Elder" correspond to the ages of 80, 90, and 100.
The morning of the 7th is the main festival day, many people and tourists come here to watch the unique "welcoming people" ceremony, only available in Quang Ninh.
The Tien Cong Temple is a place of worship for 19 Tien Cong, who were primarily farmers and fishermen living along the lakes and rivers of Kim Nguu in Thang Long citadel and Nam Dinh province. In the 15th century, they and their families traveled down the Red River to the mouth of the Bach Dang River, gradually discovering and developing the land, building dikes, and reclaiming land from the sea to create the developed Ha Nam island region as it is today.
With its traditional values of remembering one's roots and showing gratitude, the Tien Co festival is not just a simple longevity celebration, but an opportunity for descendants to express their gratitude to their ancestors who contributed to the founding and preservation of the village. In 2017, the festival was honored as a national intangible cultural heritage.
