In an interview with the media, Frank Leboeuf, a 1998 World Cup champion, sarcastically remarked that Pogba's chance of returning to the national team was like "summoning Zinedine Zidane back to play."
Specifically, Leboeuf analyzed: “Pogba is over 30 years old, while there are many other players who show more consistency. It will be very difficult for coach Didier Deschamps to choose to call up Pogba. Maybe he wants to call up N'Golo Kante, so why not call up Antoine Griezmann and then Zinedine Zidane? That's really difficult. I think Deschamps said Pogba has a chance (to return to the French national team) out of politeness, but for me, it's over.”
This statement quickly caused a stir, because Pogba was one of the most important players in France's 2018 World Cup victory, scoring in the final 4-2 win against Croatia.
Coach Didier Deschamps had previously mentioned the possibility of Pogba being called back to the national team, given that the midfielder's last appearance in his 91 appearances was against South Africa in March 2022.
According to Goal , with fierce competition in midfield and little time remaining before the 2026 World Cup, Pogba's chances of returning to his peak are clearly very slim.
"You can train, but playing in a real match is a completely different matter. Pogba is over 30 years old, and the French national team currently has many young, stable players who maintain high performance," Leboeuf concluded.
