Groups of people who should not consume persimmons

People with diabetes

Persimmons contain 10.8% carbohydrates, mostly simple monosaccharides and disaccharides. Therefore, eating persimmons makes them easily absorbed by the body, leading to increased blood sugar levels, which is dangerous for diabetics. Pickled persimmons also cause a rise in blood sugar, so people with diabetes should avoid this fruit.

People with stomach ulcers

Additionally, persimmons should not be eaten by people with poor digestion, those with impaired stomach function, chronic gastritis, postpartum women, people with weakened immune systems, and those suffering from colds.

People with anemia

Persimmons are not suitable for people with iron-deficiency anemia because they contain a lot of tannins which combine with iron to form a precipitate, hindering the absorption of iron from food. Additionally, persimmons should not be eaten while taking iron supplements.

People with low blood pressure and general weakness.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, fresh persimmons are slightly cooling in nature and can lower blood pressure. Therefore, they should not be used by people who are debilitated, have low blood pressure, suffer from chronic fatigue, or women who have recently given birth.

Certain foods, when combined with persimmons, can be harmful.

Do not eat persimmons with seafood.

Persimmons are incompatible with seafood in general, such as shrimp and crab. These foods should not be eaten together. Because shrimp and crab are high in protein, combining them with persimmons can cause food poisoning problems such as stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea.

This phenomenon occurs because tannins, along with other substances in persimmons, cause the proteins in seafood to precipitate, remain in the intestines, and over time ferment and rot. In more severe cases, these substances can form stones in the stomach, causing bleeding or perforation, which is life-threatening.

Do not eat persimmons with eggs.

Persimmons should also not be eaten with eggs. This is because the combination of these two foods in the intestines carries the risk of causing food poisoning, vomiting, or acute enteritis.

If you accidentally ate persimmons after eating eggs, you should drink a diluted salt solution mixed with boiled water or fresh ginger juice mixed with warm water to cleanse your intestines. If you can't vomit everything out, drink these solutions several times to make vomiting easier. Afterwards, use a laxative to remove the harmful substances from your body.

Rinse your mouth thoroughly after eating persimmons.

Persimmons contain a lot of sugar and pectin. After eating, these substances accumulate in the spaces between teeth and in the mouth. On the other hand, the tannic acid abundant in persimmons also causes tooth erosion, leading to cavities.

You should drink plenty of water and brush your teeth thoroughly after eating persimmons, especially pickled persimmons.
