What a pity for Phuong My Chi!

Phuong My Chi won very few awards, even though 2025 was supposed to be her peak year. She lost to Hoa Minzy by just 0.7% of the votes at the Green Wave Awards and recently faced controversy for allegedly copying Jennie.

41% of the votes went to Phuong My Chi for the Female Singer/Rapper of the Year category at the Green Wave Awards. This is a very high percentage, and she would have almost certainly won in other categories. However, this year Hoa Minzy had a slight edge with 41.7%.

That being said, the judging panel (comprising experts, artists in the music industry, and journalists) rated both almost equally, and both surpassed the other female singers; Phuong My Chi simply lacked a bit of luck.

Phuong My Chi is excellent, but...

If overcoming oneself is the most difficult thing, then Phuong My Chi has already achieved that in 2025.

Following a successful 2024 with her album "Crane Universe," concerts for students, and several hit songs that resonated with young people, Phuong My Chi's 2025 will be even more brilliant as she wins third place in the Asian music competition Sing! Asia and becomes the champion of "Em xinh say hi ," one of the hottest music programs of the year in Vietnam.

Her hit songs "Bóng phù hoa" and "Ếch ngoài đáy giếng" dominated the big stages.

In both competitions, Phuong My Chi demonstrated captivating performance skills, songwriting abilities, strong live singing, sustained high notes, a unique artistic image, and a passion for folk music.

Although she follows a modern music path with folk elements, similar to some other famous singers, she still maintains her own unique style: a cheerful, playful image and the personality of a prominent representative of Gen Z.

Even at the unofficial PIPA music awards, established by some well-known music producers in Vietnam, Phuong My Chi was named Female Singer of the Year.

According to some music producers, Northern Vietnamese musical elements have long since reached their golden age in contemporary music, but it wasn't until Phuong My Chi's appearance that Southern Vietnamese elements received similar attention in pop music.

She brought traditional Vietnamese opera, folk songs, and bolero closer to young people without straying too far from their essence.

A regrettable misstep.

Phương Mỹ Chi's products, performances, and personal achievements over the past year have all been good and difficult to criticize. Although she hasn't had a national hit like " Bắc Bling" or "Còn gì đẹp hơn ," her songs have all been well-received by young people.

When it comes to concerts or fan meetings, Gen Z singers always offer free tickets because they know that many of their fans are students or young people who don't have much money. To be able to do free shows, they perform more often to save up. She recently celebrated 13 years in her career, a very long journey for a singer who is only 23 years old.

While on a brilliant career path, Phuong My Chi unexpectedly suffered a setback at the beginning of 2026, and it happened on a stage that was heavily invested in.

Her medley of "Bóng phù hoa" and "Ếch ngoài đáy giếng" at the recent Green Wave Awards faced criticism for sounding similar to a performance by South Korean singer Jennie at a recent awards ceremony.

There are many similarities, from the overall concept and the resemblance in clothing and sunglasses to the dance moves and overall demeanor.

This was a performance she gave with such intensity that she collapsed on stage, breathless, after finishing.

Amidst the heated controversy, Phuong My Chi said: "I understand that uniqueness in an artist's journey is something every artist wants to be recognized for by the audience. And it's also something that fans of artists cherish and preserve."

"With that performance, for whatever reason, it caused the audience to have doubts and create associations with the image of other senior artists. This is certainly not what Chi is aiming for on her path to clarifying the value of her music and her unique individuality, and she will take serious responsibility to adjust it."

Besides apologizing to the audience, she proposed a drastic solution: she would no longer post any information related to the performance on any platform.

Perhaps the incident will eventually pass and she will regain the audience's favor, but this setback is still very regrettable because Phuong My Chi is usually known as an artist with a unique style and creative personality.

Many experts admit that if they had to choose between Hoa Minzy and Phuong My Chi for awards, they would be "heartbroken" because both are deserving. And judging from the award results this past January, it's clear that many people have "heartbrokenly" leaned towards Hoa Minzy.
