Specifically, during the April 30th - May 1st, 2026 holiday, along the Phuoc Tan - Bai Nga coastal road, in the Hoa Xuan commune, several cases of tourists being attacked by monkeys were recorded. Verification by the Forest Protection Department confirmed that the monkeys attacking people were not wild monkeys, but rather monkeys received by the Forest Protection Unit in the eastern part of Dak Lak province from individuals who voluntarily surrendered them, or as a result of handling violations related to wildlife, and then released back into their natural habitat.
Most of these monkeys were released into the natural forest within the Deo Ca Landscape and Environment Forest area (managed by the Deo Ca Special Forest Management Board), which has suitable habitat conditions, helping to reduce conflicts between wildlife and humans.
However, during their search for food, the monkeys have migrated to the mountainous area to the east bordering the Phuoc Tan - Bai Nga coastal road, leading to several recent incidents of monkeys attacking locals and tourists.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thien Van, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dak Lak province, to ensure tourism activities, the safety of the people, and the protection of the monkey population, Dak Lak province has directed the People's Committee of Hoa Xuan commune to deploy functional forces to strengthen patrols on the Phuoc Tan - Bai Nga coastal road to promptly handle and assist, preventing similar incidents from occurring.
The province has instructed the Department of Agriculture and Environment to direct the Provincial Forest Protection Department to take the lead and coordinate with local authorities to survey the wild monkey population in the forest area bordering the coastal road in order to develop appropriate wildlife management and protection plans; and to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
The Provincial People's Committee also requested the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to direct the Management Board of Bai Mon - Mui Dai Lanh Relic Site to strengthen patrols throughout the entire site, prepare plans to handle any wildlife intrusion; and provide information, explanations, and warnings to local people and tourists at the site about the incident to ensure their peace of mind while experiencing the site.
The Dak Lak Provincial Forest Protection Department also directed the Tay Hoa Regional Forest Protection Unit to coordinate with the Hoa Xuan Commune People's Committee to strengthen continuous patrols on the Phuoc Tan - Bai Nga route to promptly assist people; at the same time, install a "Wild Monkey Area" danger warning system at key locations such as Bai Tien, Mui Dien, and other popular stopping points; and intensify propaganda and explanation, requiring people and tourists to follow the "3 no's" rule - "No close contact", "No feeding", and "No teasing monkeys" to ensure safety.
To definitively resolve this situation, in the coming period, functional forces will coordinate with conservation experts, local authorities, and relevant units to thoroughly survey the habits and behaviors of the monkey troop. In cases where there are particularly aggressive monkeys that frequently cause trouble, plans will be made to relocate them deeper into the core of the special-use forest to avoid contact with transportation routes and tourist spots.
Relevant units are requested to rearrange rest stops along the coastal route, deploy dedicated security teams at the Bai Mon - Mui Dai Lanh historical site and the Phuoc Tan - Bai Nga coastal route to remind tourists about safeguarding their luggage and food to avoid attracting monkeys; and to study the application of administrative penalties for individuals who intentionally tease or mistreat monkeys, provoking their aggressive instincts.
The Bai Mon - Mui Dai Lanh historical site (Hoa Xuan commune, Dak Lak province) is the place that welcomes the first sunrise on the Vietnamese mainland. It boasts an ancient lighthouse, majestic cliffs, and a pristine, unspoiled beach, attracting many locals and tourists to visit, learn about, and experience its beauty.
