Alaba's injury is a major blow for Real Madrid. |
Real Madrid have confirmed that David Alaba and Ferland Mendy are the latest injury cases. The club's website announced on April 29th: "Following tests on Ferland Mendy, we confirm that the defender has suffered a torn hamstring in his right thigh. The final results will be updated as needed. As for David Alaba, he has been diagnosed with a torn medial meniscus in his left knee."
Real Madrid has not disclosed the recovery time for the two defenders. Spanish newspapers fear that both Alaba and Mendy could be sidelined for the rest of the season.
Earlier, Real Madrid confirmed that Antonio Rudiger had undergone successful surgery to definitively treat a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee. The German international will be sidelined for 6-8 weeks, meaning he will miss the remainder of the season.
This injury crisis in the defense poses a major problem for Real Madrid, especially as they are in the race for the La Liga title. On the league table, Carlo Ancelotti's team is currently 4 points behind Barcelona. The two teams will face off in a crucial La Liga match on May 11th.
Coach Ancelotti may continue to place his trust in Aurelien Tchouameni or Raul Asencio at center back, or Fran Garcia and Federico Valverde at full-back in the upcoming matches.
Eduardo Camavinga, Real Madrid's versatile player, has also been confirmed to be out for the rest of the season due to a complete tear of the adductor muscle in his left leg. The midfielder hopes to be fit in time for the FIFA Club World Cup in mid-June.
