Real Madrid are likely to end the season empty-handed for the second consecutive year. |
The 1-1 draw against Betis on April 25th effectively ended Real Madrid's hopes. From a position of controlling their own destiny, they allowed Barcelona to pull ahead with a run of nine consecutive wins, creating an 11-point gap in just two months. This is a gap that is almost impossible to bridge.
If Barcelona beat Osasuna, and Real Madrid fail to overcome Espanyol in this week's La Liga matchday 34, the title race will be effectively over.
Consecutive failures in both La Liga and the Champions League, coupled with internal conflicts, particularly the tension between the coaching staff and Vinicius Junior, have destabilized the dressing room. Decisions from above, including changes on the coaching bench, have only exacerbated the situation.
The arrival of Alvaro Arbeloa initially brought positive short-term signs. Real even took the lead in the league in round 24, but the effect quickly faded. A defeat against Osasuna, a shock in the Copa del Rey, and a subsequent series of dropped points brought the team back to harsh reality.
In the Champions League, Real Madrid rekindled their hopes with a spirited performance against Manchester City. But against Bayern Munich, they suffered a bitter defeat, especially in the second leg when they lost in the final minutes.
Currently, Real Madrid no longer has control over their own destiny. The most realistic goal is probably to postpone Barcelona's coronation, at least until the El Clásico match on May 11th. Otherwise, the scenario of having to stand guard for their rivals at Camp Nou would be an unbearable pain for the Royal team.
