In the early hours of May 21st, the English team defeated Freiburg 3-0 to lift the Europa League trophy for the first time. According to UEFA's new prize money distribution system, simply reaching the final earned each team €7 million. With the championship, Aston Villa received a total of approximately €25.7 million in prize money.

This season marks a major change in the European club competition system as UEFA has adopted a new format for the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. The total prize money for the Europa League has also been significantly increased.

All 36 teams participating in the qualifying round received a fixed sum of 4.31 million euros. In addition, clubs were rewarded based on their performance: each win earned 450,000 euros, while a draw was worth 150,000 euros. Teams that qualified directly for the round of 16 received an extra 600,000 euros.

Besides the financial benefits, winning the Europa League also secured Aston Villa a place in next season's Champions League. However, Unai Emery's team is already in the top four of the Premier League. If they finish the season in fifth place, the additional Champions League spot reserved for the Europa League winner could be transferred to the team finishing sixth in the Premier League.

This opens up a historic opportunity for Bournemouth or Brighton to secure a place in Europe's most prestigious competition next season.
