Summer boarding services are popular, Da Nang City Department of Education and Training is determined to take drastic measures

In the role of a parent looking for a place to send their children to audit classes this coming summer, we approached and received quotes from many summer boarding service facilities in Da Nang City. For example, a center in Cam Le District (Da Nang City) introduced a pre-primary boarding class with prices ranging from 1.7 - 1.85 million VND/month.

With this price, from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm every day (Monday to Friday), boarding students will learn math, Vietnamese, English, drawing and mental math. The cost of lunch and dessert for 20 days is 500,000 VND/child.

This center promises that boarding students will be taught by reputable teachers and well cared for.

According to a survey by reporters, many IT and English centers in the city also posted notices recruiting students for summer boarding classes with fees ranging from 2 to 3 million VND/month. On social networking groups and forums, the story of sending children to summer boarding classes is hotly discussed by parents.

From these groups, the centers also "take advantage" to introduce incentives when parents send their children to summer boarding school. Along with that, private classes run by some individuals who claim to be teachers are also openly recruiting summer boarding students.

Ms. NTH (residing in Nai Hien Dong Ward, Son Tra District, Da Nang City) said that since April, she has been looking for summer boarding classes for her son who is about to enter first grade. Ms. H. shared that although she wanted to give her son a full summer, due to her job, she could not stay home with him, even on Saturdays, so she had to find a summer boarding class for her son to attend.

On forums and groups, parents posted to find summer boarding classes for their children and received responses from many individuals as well as centers.

"I found a summer boarding audit class that costs 2 million VND/month. I plan to send my child there after the school year ends to learn math, English and Vietnamese, which will also help him get familiar with letters and avoid confusion when entering first grade," said Ms. H.

Mr. Tran Nguyen Minh Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City, said that in mid-April, the Department sent a dispatch to relevant units regarding the rectification of foreign language training, information technology, life skills education and extracurricular educational activities.

Mr. Thanh affirmed that for foreign language, information technology, and life skills centers, it is absolutely forbidden to organize summer English boarding programs, summer life skills boarding programs, boarding activities for students, and childcare for preschool children at the operating locations of foreign language, information technology, and life skills centers. Organizing these activities is not within the center's duties and authority.

At the same time, centers that organize teaching programs approved by the Department of Education and Training must not arbitrarily use textbooks and teaching materials contrary to the programs registered with the Department of Education and Training and current regulations.

Individuals claiming to be teachers also post summer boarding classes.

Mr. Thanh said that the Department has requested the Department of Education and Training of districts to continue to strengthen the review and coordination of inspections of units in the area; proactively propose and advise the People's Committee of districts and the Department of Education and Training if they detect units operating without permission or not in accordance with their functions for timely handling and resolution according to regulations.

"The Department will coordinate with relevant departments, branches and the Department of Education and Training of districts to strengthen inspection and examination of the organization and operation of foreign language, information technology and life skills centers. If violations are detected, the Department will carry out suspension and dissolution procedures according to regulations," said Tran Nguyen Minh Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City.
