| Former world number one Medvedev suffers another shocking elimination in the first round. |
Sixth seed Daniil Medvedev lost to Adam Walton 2-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1, 4-6 in the first round, extending his poor run of form at Roland Garros.
The defeat marked Medvedev's seventh opening-round exit at Roland Garros in 10 seasons. The 30-year-old has lost 10 out of 20 Grand Slam matches in Paris. Following this result, Medvedev admitted he might have to adjust his schedule for next season.
"I will consider playing one more tournament before Roland Garros," Medvedev said after his loss to Walton. "Normally I wouldn't do that, but with the current results not going well, why not try something new? That's the only option I'll consider for next year."
On the Suzanne-Lenglen court, Walton played tenaciously. The Australian player had given Medvedev a tough time in Cincinnati last year and this time he continued to show that he was not intimidated when facing the former world number one.
Medvedev still showed his class at many moments, demonstrated by his 54 winners – significantly more than Walton's 34 – but the sixth seed also made 54 unforced errors.
In the deciding set, Medvedev led 4-2, but from the moment Walton saved two break points in the next game, the world number 97 played increasingly well. He held his serve to narrow the score to 3-4, before winning the final three games and completing the comeback after 3 hours and 22 minutes. In the second round, Walton will face Zachary Svajda, who just defeated Alexei Popyrin 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 7-5.
Medvedev entered Roland Garros on high spirits after reaching the semi-finals of the Rome Masters and forcing world number one Sinner into a third set before narrowly losing. However, in Paris, everything crumbled too quickly for the Russian player.
"I know I'm capable of playing well at Roland Garros, it's just that this tournament is more difficult for me than other Grand Slams, especially in the first round," Medvedev added. "I'm not playing my best tennis. Sometimes I play very well, sometimes not so well, but overall, I can't improve my game enough to win the whole match."
