Highlands hold festival
On the morning of November 9th, the road leading to the ABaanh 1 residential area – the venue for the solidarity festival for both villages – was adorned with flags and flowers. The Co Tu people, dressed in their traditional attire, arrived early to help village officials and border guards prepare traditional dishes and decorate the festival space.
Mr. Hoih Doi, Head of the Front Committee of ABaanh 1 village, said that for several days now, the villagers have been actively helping with village affairs. The gong and drum teams from the solidarity groups have gathered at the communal house to practice their celebratory performances.
The young men of the village split up to gather leaves and cut bamboo by the stream to prepare for wrapping the traditional cakes. Another group cleaned up and prepared the ground for the festival. The night before, the villagers gathered around the fire, waiting for the bamboo-tube rice and buffalo horn-shaped cakes, fragrant with freshly cooked sticky rice.
In Voong village, village elder C'Lau Blao, upon hearing that Provincial Party Secretary Luong Nguyen Minh Triet was visiting, prepared a special gift from the Co Tu people for the distinguished guest. It was a shirt made of tree bark and wooden carvings of a Tring bird and a deer. The elder meticulously cared for every detail to make the gift beautiful and dignified.
“The elder gave the bark-covered shirt as a reminder of the difficult and impoverished days. Thanks to President Ho Chi Minh, the Party, and the State, the Co Tu people have food and clothing. The statues of the Triing bird and the deer represent the tireless spirit and unwavering determination of the Co Tu people. More importantly, this gift is an affirmation of the love for trees and birds, and the unwavering commitment to preserving the forest and its lush greenery of Tay Giang,” shared village elder C’Lâu Blao.
The highlands are celebrating. The sound of drums and gongs resounds. Co Tu girls gracefully perform the Tang Tung Da Da dance. Village elder C'Lâu Blao sings a song about the Co Tu people's faith in the Party, about their tradition of unity and mutual support for progress…
Upholding traditions
Representing 119 households, Mr. Zơrâm Nhoong - Head of ABaanh 2 village - proudly spoke about the spirit of solidarity between the two villages. “Despite many difficulties, the people have not waited for or relied on support from the Party and the State, but have always sought ways to escape poverty and help each other develop economically . From the beginning of the year until now, the Front Committee of the two villages has mobilized people to help 20 households in difficult circumstances improve their lives and supported 5 households to escape poverty.”
"The Party's guidelines, the State's policies and laws, the emulation movements, and the village's customs have been well received and implemented by the people. In the two hamlets, 100% of households participated in donating land and crops for the commune and district to build roads, level the ground for resettlement, and construct irrigation works. The practice of demanding dowry in wedding ceremonies, slaughtering buffaloes and cows, and other backward customs have gradually been eliminated. Internal conflicts are resolved promptly and in accordance with regulations and the traditional customs of the Co Tu people. Five solidarity groups have formed drum and gong ensembles and folk singing groups to preserve traditional cultural values," Mr. Nhoong said.
During a conversation with the people of ABaanh 1 and ABaanh 2, Provincial Party Secretary Luong Nguyen Minh Triet highly appreciated the tradition of solidarity and cooperation of the Co Tu people in building a new life and preserving cultural values, contributing to the overall achievements in the socio-economic development of the province.
At the same time, it was affirmed that national unity is the immense strength of the entire people, therefore every citizen has the responsibility to continue preserving and promoting this fine tradition. That is the spirit of the National Unity Day initiated by the Vietnam Fatherland Front .
Comrade Luong Nguyen Minh Triet stated that the festival also serves as a forum for the people to exercise their democratic role, contribute ideas and propose practical issues in the residential area to the Party committee and government; it is an opportunity to honor cultural values, create motivation and spiritual strength to build a better new life together.
"Despite the encouraging achievements, the poverty rate in the two villages is still over 41%. Therefore, in the coming time, the important task is for the people to continue helping each other escape poverty, eliminate temporary housing, and improve the quality of life, especially for policy beneficiaries and single-parent households."
Authorities at all levels must effectively utilize resources and be flexible in implementing the three national target programs; and strengthen policy communication so that people understand and participate in projects and sub-projects.
"At the same time, we must continue to review and closely adhere to the '9 yes, 5 no' criteria in Resolution 14 of the Tay Giang District Party Committee on building new rural areas, with the spirit of great determination, high effort, decisive and effective action. And to successfully achieve these goals, Party members, village elders, and influential people must set an example and take the lead to change the mindset and way of doing things of the people," emphasized Provincial Party Secretary Luong Nguyen Minh Triet.
