Sam Burns has moved to the lead at the US Open. |
Heavy rain later in the day forced a temporary halt to the second round, leaving 13 golfers without a chance to finish. When the tournament resumed on Saturday morning, only three golfers remained in negative standing – the fewest at the US Open in seven years.
While many big names struggled to make the cut, Burns played consistently with 6 birdies – all from under 10 feet. He finished the round with a total score of -3, temporarily leading by one stroke over JJ Spaun (-2), who lost the lead after a disastrous bogey on the 18th hole.
Following closely behind is Viktor Hovland with a total score of -1, thanks to an impressive round of 68 (-2) including two hole-outs from 50 feet. Despite a double bogey on hole 2, the Norwegian golfer was pleased with his current position: “Although it was tiring having to concentrate on each shot, I feel I managed to maintain a considerable level of composure.”
Burns also made history by becoming the second golfer in the major era to take the lead after 36 holes, despite being outside the top 30 after the first round. Curtis Strange had previously achieved the same feat at the 1989 US Open, where he went on to win the tournament.
"I played very well today," Burns shared. "Maintaining a positive attitude and a smart approach is always crucial in a tournament like this."

Bryson DeChambeau is dethroned as the former US Open champion. |
A number of big names were eliminated early.
This year's US Open is demonstrating its true, unforgiving nature, and Oakmont – the renowned "cauldron" of golf – continues to prove why it is one of the most challenging courses in the world .
Even Rory McIlroy, one of the top contenders, couldn't escape the pressure. He made a mistake and lost his temper to the point of throwing his club during the competition, although he later managed a birdie on the 18th hole to make the cut.
Shane Lowry made a rare mistake by inadvertently picking up his ball without marking its position. Thriston Lawrence had reached a score of -6, but completely collapsed with a series of six bogeys and one double bogey in the final nine holes.
Thomas Detry suffered three double bogeys in just four holes, while Phil Mickelson likely ended his 34th and possibly final US Open with a round of 74 (+4), not enough to make the cut.

With the cut set at +7, a number of big-name golfers had to say goodbye to the tournament. Most notably, the defending champion Bryson DeChambeau.
The second round was a nightmare with 8 bogeys, 1 double bogey, and only 3 birdies, leaving him to finish the 36 holes with a total score of +10, 3 strokes short of the cut. DeChambeau became the first defending champion to be eliminated after 36 holes at the US Open since Martin Kaymer in 2015.
Other prominent figures shared the same fate: Dustin Johnson (+10) – who won at Oakmont in 2016, Justin Thomas (+12), Justin Rose (+14), and Shane Lowry (+17).
