In 2019, Samsung entered the foldable smartphone market with the introduction of the Galaxy Fold. At the same time, the company committed to providing software updates for the device for up to three years and security updates for four years.
According to 9to5Google , Samsung has confirmed it will stop providing regular security patch updates for the first-generation Galaxy Fold after the model turns four years old, as initially announced. This means the device will not receive any further updates after this announcement.
The Galaxy Fold is Samsung's first generation of foldable smartphones to hit the market.
Not long ago, the Galaxy Fold received its final security patch and lost the chance to upgrade to Android 13 with the One UI 5 update. The next model to likely be discontinued will be the Galaxy Z Fold 2, launched in 2020. The Fold 2 will not receive the One UI 6 update, but will continue to receive security patches until 2024.
For those still using the Galaxy Fold, tech experts suggest it's time to switch to a newer device, as the lack of security update support makes the phone vulnerable to cyberattacks.
The Galaxy Fold pioneered the foldable smartphone market, bringing about a change when most smartphones revolved around a bar-style design. However, the product faced numerous challenges. Many reports of screen and fold/hinge issues surfaced, forcing Samsung to postpone its launch to address them. Some problems persisted even after the official global release.
Nevertheless, the device also "contributed" to proving the feasibility of foldable phones, while also paving the way for many other manufacturers such as Google, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, etc., to join the game. Currently, Samsung has released the 5th generation Galaxy Z Fold, along with the Z Flip series with a clamshell (vertical folding) screen design.
