Erhu artist Tran Van Xam is the founder of the Net Erhu group, which performs on Hoan Kiem Lake walking street.
Musician Nguyen Quang Long said that Tran Van Xam hid his illness so few of his friends knew about it. Over the years, the artist has been busy with many big and small shows, taking his students to perform every week on the Hoan Kiem Lake walking street in Hanoi .
"Xam's playing is very special, intoxicating, like an alcoholic, in a trance, forgetting everything else. To me, Xam is a genius of the erhu," said musician Quang Long.
Musician Nguyen Quang Long said, Tran Van Xam plays all genres, from Vietnamese folk songs to classics, old and new Vietnamese songs, international songs... with the erhu.
"No matter what style or genre he plays, Xam is still Xam, his sound always has a 'drunk, crazy' quality. In my own perspective, Xam is a monster of the Vietnamese erhu in the current period.
Although we are not close, we have known each other for more than twenty years because we studied at the same music school and lived in the same dormitory. In all that time, we have only “bumped into” each other a few times in the arts through performances.
I respect Xam's talent. Not only me, but also my brothers and musical friends who know him, almost all respect Xam's musical playing," the scholar confided.
Singer Minh Quan could not hide his shock when he heard the bad news, because he had just been chatting with his junior.
"Just recently I sent you a song to record, we still text each other, but now we have heard the news of your passing. Farewell, an outstanding talent of Vietnamese music, a teacher of many young future artists. Rest in peace, Tran Van Xam!", singer Minh Quan confided.
Musician Tran Manh Hung mourns artist Tran Van Xam - a talented Vietnamese erhu player.
"I remember the day I taught solfege for the ethnic class, Tran Van Xam was the smartest student among the students in that class. Xam had very sensitive ears, the ears of an artist born to do professional music.
After that, I invited Xam to perform and record many times... so we called each other like colleagues. I wish his soul will soon reach the peaceful realm," musician Tran Manh Hung expressed.
