On July 30, 2024, the giant TBM robot officially started and drilled the first meters of the Nhon - Hanoi station metro project (underground station section S9 - Kim Ma). After more than 3 months at a depth of 20 meters, the TBM robot drilled about 625 meters.
The underground section of the Nhon - Hanoi station line was excavated using a pair of TBMs specially designed for the project, named Speed and Boldness. The machines were manufactured by Herrenkecht (Germany), are over 100 meters long, and weigh about 850 tons. The contractor in charge of the S9 - Kim Ma station package is the joint venture HyunDai & Ghella (HGU).
To construct the Nhon - Hanoi Station Metro Tunnel (underground station section S9 - Kim Ma) at a depth of 20 meters, every day, specialized trains will move on the rails, transporting construction materials and waste soil to the drilling location.
Every day, the TBM robot drills 10 meters, and as it drills, workers will follow to install the tunnel lining.
According to the representative of the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board, as of November 14, 2024, the underground ramp was 73.3% completed, station S9 was 51.7% completed, the vertical shaft was 41.74% completed, stations S10, S11, S12 (including lane change and garage) were 65.3%, 58.97%, 43.3% completed, respectively. Notably, the TBM tunnel boring machine has drilled 631 meters deep into the tunnel, 420 tunnel lining rings have been installed, and the location of the underground drill point has reached the corresponding point at lane 391, Kim Ma street.
All construction conditions at a depth of 20 meters underground are strictly controlled through a surveillance camera system, and foreign experts will regularly monitor the technique via the screen to promptly adjust if any problems arise.
It is known that the TBM operates in a closed cycle, digging at a maximum speed of 60mm/min. During the digging process, the machine will spray soil conditioner, also known as FOAM, in front of the cutting head to help soften the soil, prevent binding and support the balance of pressure at the digging face. At the same time, the tail of the machine will spray grease to sweep onto the outer surface of the tunnel shell, helping to protect the tail brush, prevent water from flowing back into the machine and seal the joints on the outside of the tunnel shell. The tail of the machine also pumps a mortar solution to fill the gap between the tunnel shell and the soil to ensure prevention of subsidence during construction.
All types of gas and clean water pipes are located right in the basement.
The construction site operates 24/7, with 15-17 workers per shift. Experts and workers will eat and rest right in the basement.
Technical equipment used for construction, such as pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc., are all cleaned and maintained regularly.
