HCM CityThe woman, 51 years old, was weak, had poor appetite, had persistent dull abdominal pain, and the doctor discovered a large tumor on the left side of her liver, occupying the entire abdominal cavity.
The patient discovered a tumor in her abdomen 8 years ago. The doctor advised surgery but she did not agree. Since then, the tumor has grown more and more, causing the patient's abdomen to bulge as if she were pregnant, causing more pain.
On March 24, doctor Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Unit, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, said that the patient had a liver hemangioma (Hemangioma). The tumor is benign but huge in size. If operated open, it will cause pain as well as loss of aesthetics for the patient. In addition, the tumor compresses for a long time, the patient eats poorly and is malnourished, so the abdominal wall muscles are thin and susceptible to abdominal wall hernia later on.
Doctors decided to perform laparoscopic surgery and were very careful because the large tumor was compressing other organs in the abdomen. Surgeons face many challenges when moving the liver, the possibility of rupturing the tumor causing bleeding and the risk of damaging other organs.
Before surgery, the patient had blood vessels that feed the tumor blocked to reduce the size of the tumor as well as reduce the risk of bleeding. The surgical team safely removed all liver tumors, then opened a section of about 20 cm to remove the entire tumor weighing more than 5 kg. The patient's health is stable and has just been discharged from the hospital.
Hepatic hemangiomas are benign tumors in the liver, most are small in size and do not cause any symptoms. In most cases, the tumor does not change in size or grows very little, only about 2 mm per year. People with liver hemangioma need to maintain a healthy lifestyle and eat scientifically to keep their liver healthy, and have regular check-ups to monitor the development of the tumor.
