The Opta supercomputer predicts England will win Euro 2024, while the Octopus and Gemini models both choose France, and ChatGPT has a different prediction.
Opta
Opta (UK) is described as an "analyst that creates big surprises" among football fans and has accurately predicted the winners of several leagues in the past.
Reportedly, this supercomputer's analysis is based on data from the teams participating in Euro 2024 and runs 10,000 simulations. The parameters included pre-tournament performance, player form, and the history of matches between participating teams.
Opta predicts that England will win Euro 2024. Specifically, simulations show that the team captained by Harry Kane has a 48.2% chance of reaching the semi-finals, a 31.1% chance of reaching the final, and a 19.9% chance of winning the championship.
France will be England's most formidable opponent, with a 48.1% chance of reaching the semi-finals, a 30.4% chance of reaching the final, and a 19.1% chance of winning the championship. The chances of Germany, Spain, and Portugal winning the championship are 12.4%, 9.8%, and 9.2%, respectively.
Before the start of Euro 2024, Opta predicted that host nation Germany would win their opening match. The result was a 5-1 victory for Germany against Scotland – a team the supercomputer estimated had only a 0.1% chance of winning the tournament.
Octopus
The Belgian company Luzmo used its Octopus AI model and private cloud platform to run simulations of one million European Championship matches. On average, France won 22 out of every 100 simulations, achieving the highest percentage. Luzmo's home country, Belgium, has a 3.4% chance of winning the cup.
Haroen Vermylen, CTO of Luzmo, stated: "The model itself is essentially a match simulator based on things like offensive ratings, team defensive ratings, then considering potential and expected goals, and finally comparing them to other teams to produce a final result."
The AI Octopus also correctly predicted the Germany-Scotland match, stating a "76% chance" that Germany would win. The model will continuously update its scores and other metrics to refine the results over time, but currently, it believes Euro 2024 will be a three-way race between France, Portugal, and Croatia.
WHO
Most popular free AI models, such as Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, or OpenAI ChatGPT, refuse to predict the winning team.
However, the paid version of ChatGPT Plus, using the latest GPT-4o model, assesses a "high probability" of Germany winning at home due to "a combination of youth and experience, a solid foundation from the Bundesliga, and impressive performance in previous international tournaments." Meanwhile, the Gemini Advance version gives a similar result to AI Octopus, suggesting the trophy will go to France.
