TPO - Astronomy enthusiasts will be able to admire the third supermoon of the year on October 17th.
According to the Hanoi Astronomical Society (HAS), the supermoon will be easily visible from Vietnam at 6:28 PM on October 17th. At this time, the Moon will be on the opposite side of the Earth, and its face will be fully illuminated, making it easy for everyone to see a "super huge" moon.
This supermoon was called the Hunter's Moon by the first Native American tribes because it coincided with the fall of leaves and the start of hunting season. It is also known as the Traveling Moon and the Blood Moon.
According to Richard Nolle, the father of the supermoon concept, there will be four supermoons in 2024, occurring on August 19th, September 18th, October 17th, and November 15th.
On supermoon nights, you'll see the moon in the sky with a disc that's about 8% larger and about 15% brighter than on a normal full moon night. Therefore, even when observing the moon normally, you can still notice this difference.
A 'supermoon' will appear in mid-October. |
Besides the appearance of the supermoon, this October, astronomy enthusiasts can also admire two meteor showers: the Draconids and the Orionids.
The Draconids meteor shower will be visible on October 7th. This is a minor meteor shower with a rate of only about 10 meteors per hour, and the best time to see it is in the early evening.
The Orionids are an average meteor shower producing up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. They are created by dust particles left behind by Halley's Comet, and have been known and observed since ancient times.
The meteor shower occurs annually from October 2nd to November 7th. This year's peak will be on the night of October 21st and the early morning of October 22nd. The best time to view it will be after midnight.
