"Like other endemic respiratory diseases, recurring outbreaks of COVID-19 are expected throughout the year. There is no indication that the variants circulating locally are more contagious or cause more severe illness than those that have been circulating previously," the Infectious Disease Administration (CDA) stated.
The CDA reported that the estimated number of COVID-19 cases in the week of May 10-16 rose to 12,700, compared with 8,000 cases the previous week. During the same period, the average daily hospitalizations due to COVID-19 increased from 56 to 73, with an average of one patient per day requiring intensive care unit (ICU) treatment.
According to the CDA, public hospitals are capable of managing the increase in COVID-19 cases, and it suggests that this increase may be due to several factors, including a decline in community immunity.
The NB.1.8.1 variant – the next strain to emerge after the JN.1 variant – is the primary COVID-19 virus strain circulating in Singapore, accounting for more than half of the cases sequenced in the country. The CDA stated that existing COVID-19 vaccines remain effective in protecting against this variant.

Dr. Nares Smitasin, a senior consultant at the National University Hospital (NUH), said the recent increase in COVID-19 cases was predictable because the virus has transitioned to an endemic state similar to influenza.
The CDA said on May 21 that those at higher risk of severe COVID-19 are advised to get fully vaccinated, meaning they should receive a booster dose about a year after their last dose. This group includes people 60 years and older, including those living in aged care facilities, and medically vulnerable children 6 months and older.
Healthcare workers and those who live or work with medically vulnerable individuals are also encouraged to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Others aged 6 months and older who wish to receive the COVID-19 vaccine can continue to get vaccinated.
CDA also recommends that people adhere to preventative measures and fulfill their personal and social responsibilities.
