Fico's Social Democratic-Oriented Party (Smer-SD) came first in the general election on September 30 and formed a coalition with two other parties.
The appointment ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace and was broadcast live on Slovak media. This is the fourth time Fico has served as Prime Minister of Slovakia. During his election campaign, his Smer-SD party expressed its opposition to military aid to Ukraine.
In the snap elections for the Slovak State Council ( Parliament ) on September 30th, the Smer-SD came first, winning 42 seats out of the 150-seat Parliament. The Slovak Progressive Party (PS) came second with 32 seats, and the Voice of the Social Democrats (Hlas-SD) came third with 27 seats. Additionally, four other political parties and alliances secured seats in the Slovak Parliament: the OLaNO alliance with 16 seats; the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) with 12 seats; the Freedom and Solidarity Party (SaS) with 11 seats; and the Slovak National Party (SNS) with 10 seats.
At its first session on October 25, the Slovak Parliament elected Peter Pellegrini, leader of the Hlas-SD, as Speaker of Parliament.
Smer-SD has allied with Hlas-SD and SNS to secure a majority of 79 seats in the new National Assembly. Smer-SD and Hlas-SD each hold 7 ministerial seats, SNS holds 2 seats, and from 2024 will take over the newly established Minister of Sports and Tourism.
