According to The Verge , in a surprising move, the 'father' of the PlayStation 5, chief architect Mark Cerny, along with senior AMD executives, have for the first time revealed groundbreaking GPU technologies being developed for the next-generation console, believed to be the PlayStation 6 (PS6). These improvements promise to revolutionize graphics and, surprisingly, pave the way for a powerful handheld gaming device.

The technologies that will shape the graphics power of the PlayStation 6 have been revealed.

Despite acknowledging that the PS6 is still several years away and these technologies currently only exist in simulation form, revelations from Mark Cerny and Jack Huynh of AMD have painted an incredibly promising picture of the future of gaming.

The biggest highlight is the integration of specialized 'radiance cores'. Mark Cerny acknowledges that "current graphics processing methods have reached their limits," especially with ultra-heavy ray tracing and path tracing techniques.

Radiance Cores, similar to Nvidia's RT Cores, will be a hardware "ace in the hole," handling complex ray tracing tasks entirely. This will free up power for other GPU components to focus on shader and texture processing, promising a significant performance boost and making the gaming world more realistic than ever before.

Another significant improvement is 'Universal Compression' technology. This is an upgraded version of the Delta Color Compression technology on the PS5, but instead of compressing just a few components, it compresses everything in the graphics processing stream. According to AMD, this will free up bandwidth, allowing the GPU to deliver "more detail, higher frame rates, and greater efficiency."

Is the door opening for PlayStation Handheld?

Interestingly, all these improvements emphasize efficiency and low-power performance. Reducing GPU load and optimizing bandwidth are key to creating a powerful handheld gaming device that doesn't overheat or drain the battery too quickly. These technologies, originally intended for the PS6, could very well be scaled up and applied to the rumored PlayStation Handheld.

Although it's still early days, Sony's proactive sharing of its future vision shows they are confident in the path they have chosen. This news might overshadow the recently launched PS5 Pro, but it also ignites excitement for a groundbreaking generation of gaming experiences that awaits.
