According to The Verge , in a surprise move, the 'father' of the PlayStation 5, chief architect Mark Cerny, joined AMD's senior leadership to reveal for the first time the groundbreaking GPU technologies being developed for the next generation of consoles, believed to be the PlayStation 6 (PS6). These improvements promise to create a revolution in graphics and, more surprisingly, they also pave the way for a powerful handheld game console.
Revealing the technologies that will shape the graphics power of PlayStation 6
While the PS6 is still a few years away and these technologies currently only exist in emulation, the revelations from AMD's Mark Cerny and Jack Huynh paint a very promising picture of the future of gaming.

The biggest highlight is the integration of dedicated 'Radiance Cores'. Mark Cerny admits that "current graphics processing methods have reached their limits", especially with extremely heavy ray tracing and path tracing techniques.
Radiance Cores, similar to Nvidia's RT Cores, will be a hardware 'trump card', taking on complex ray tracing tasks entirely. This will free up the GPU's other components to focus on shaders and textures, promising a performance boost that will make the game world more realistic than ever.
Another big improvement is 'Universal Compression'. This is an upgrade from the PS5's Delta Color Compression, but instead of compressing just a few elements, it compresses everything in the graphics processing stream. According to AMD, this frees up bandwidth, allowing the GPU to deliver "more detail, higher frame rates, and greater efficiency."
Doors open for PlayStation Handheld?
Interestingly, all of these improvements emphasize efficiency and low-power operation. Reducing GPU load and optimizing bandwidth are key to creating a powerful handheld that doesn’t overheat or drain the battery too quickly. These PS6 technologies could very well be miniaturized and applied to a rumored PlayStation Handheld.
While it’s still early days, Sony’s proactive approach to sharing its vision for the future shows that it’s confident in the path it’s chosen. The news may overshadow the PS5 Pro’s launch, but it also fuels excitement for the next generation of groundbreaking gaming experiences that lie ahead.
