Raheem Sterling returned to the pitch after a nine-month absence with his debut for Feyenoord. The 31-year-old came on in the 61st minute of the 2-1 victory against Telstar in the 24th round of the Eredivisie on the morning of February 23rd. This was his first official match since May 25th, 2025, when he was on loan at Arsenal from Chelsea.
Sterling joined Feyenoord on a short-term contract until June, after his agreement with Chelsea ended. He had previously been out of plans under Enzo Maresca before leaving Stamford Bridge. At Rotterdam, Sterling worked with manager Robin van Persie.
Due to work permit procedures, Sterling had to wait before he was eligible to play. Van Persie took the team to Belgium for training so that he could integrate with the squad as soon as possible. Upon returning to De Kuip, Sterling received a warm welcome from the fans.
Speaking to ESPN , Sterling affirmed that he is gradually regaining his fitness: "I haven't played in a while, but I'm still trying to maintain my fitness. I'm building step by step to reach my best form. Starting with a win is important."
When asked about the possibility of returning to the England squad, Sterling said he had not spoken to manager Thomas Tuchel. "The most important thing is to continue playing football," he said.
Feyenoord are currently second in the Eredivisie and are pursuing title challenges. Sterling sees this as a new career challenge and an opportunity to regain consistency after a long period of inactivity.
With 82 caps for England and 20 goals, Sterling still has a chance to return to the Three Lions if he maintains his form. His comeback in the Netherlands marks the beginning of a new journey for this experienced striker.
