Sterling became a laughing stock at Feyenoord.

Raheem Sterling has been a major disappointment at Feyenoord, failing to score a single goal, prompting former legend Willem van Hanegem to publicly suggest the club send him home.

Sterling's contract expires in June.

Raheem Sterling was once a name synonymous with speed, unpredictability, and bursts of acceleration that tormented opposing defenses. But at 31, the English player's new journey at Feyenoord is becoming a major disappointment.

Joining the Dutch club in the winter transfer window after his contract with Chelsea ended, Sterling was expected to bring experience and class to Feyenoord during the crucial stage of the season. However, the reality turned out to be quite the opposite.

Since the end of January, Sterling has only played 6 matches, totaling 333 minutes. He hasn't played a full 90 minutes even once, has only one assist, and hasn't scored a single goal. This is even more noteworthy considering Sterling last scored in September 2024, in a League Cup match against Bolton Wanderers.

Sterling's goal-scoring drought, lasting over a year and a half, shows he's no longer the same player. His speed, once his greatest weapon, is no longer sharp enough. His runs down the wing also lack the familiar explosiveness. At Feyenoord, Sterling hasn't made the difference fans were hoping for.

Patience at Rotterdam is starting to run out. Former star Willem van Hanegem, an icon of Dutch football and Feyenoord, has been outspoken in his criticism of Sterling's performance.

“If it were Feyenoord, I would demand my money back and tell him to go home. He’s no help to anyone. Go to Ibiza, put on your swimsuit and eat paella with your wife,” Van Hanegem said.

That harsh statement clearly reflects the pressure Sterling is facing. At an ambitious club like Feyenoord, a good resume isn't enough to guarantee a place. What the team needs is tangible contribution on the pitch.

In the most recent match, Sterling wasn't used for a single minute. This is a clear sign that he's falling behind in the team's internal competition. As the season enters its final stages, managers have little time to wait for a star player to regain their form.

Sterling's contract expires in June. Given what has happened, the chances of Feyenoord keeping him are very low.

Sterling once conquered Manchester City and shone at Chelsea. But at Feyenoord, his new chapter is in danger of ending prematurely.
