The dynamism of Giang Thanh border commune

From a low-lying, acidic soil area in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle, facing countless difficulties, the border commune of Giang Thanh now boasts a new rural appearance, with thriving socio-economic conditions and a prosperous life for its people.

I accompanied officials from the Economic Department of Giang Thanh commune to visit some exemplary production models. Running along the irrigation canals, in the middle of which was a 3.5-meter-wide rural concrete road, four-wheeled vehicles could easily transport goods and fertilizers to the fields. On both sides of the road were vast, lush green rice paddies. Occasionally, I heard the sound of water pumps operating, and further on, many women were seen hunched over, replanting rice in sparse areas of the fields.

We stopped at the home of Mr. Tran Van Den, Director of Tan Thanh Agricultural Cooperative, Khanh Tan hamlet. In his spacious and well-maintained house, the front yard displayed a collection of agricultural machinery including: plows, cultivators, laser-guided field leveling machines, and drones. This investment in machinery to support the cooperative members' production helps save costs compared to hiring external services.

Tan Thanh Agricultural Cooperative has 520 hectares producing two rice crops per year. In 2025, the cooperative piloted a 50-hectare project to develop 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice linked to green growth, yielding positive results. Rice yields exceeded 1 ton per hectare, with profits ranging from 30 to 35 million VND per hectare. This winter-spring season, the cooperative expanded its registered area for the 1 million-hectare high-quality rice project to 200 hectares, establishing production linkages with businesses from the beginning of the season.

According to Tran Van Den, Director of Tan Thanh Agricultural Cooperative: “About 10 years ago, rice cultivation faced many difficulties due to low-lying, acidic soil. However, nowadays, cooperative members are cultivating and producing very favorably. The government has invested in building dikes, dredging irrigation canals, providing electricity for water pumps, and organizing field workshops to help farmers access new scientific and technical knowledge such as the "3 reductions, 3 increases" and "1 must, 5 reductions" methods. More than 80% of cooperative members understand and skillfully apply new cultivation processes, and 100% of the area is mechanized, reducing labor and costs. The cooperative's annual revenue is 6-7 billion VND. Within the cooperative, there are no longer any poor households, and the number of well-off and wealthy households is increasing.”

According to Ta Hiep, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Giang Thanh commune, in the process of reclaiming and cultivating the low-lying, acidic soil, the local government has implemented groundbreaking policies on investing in the development of synchronous infrastructure alongside economic development, contributing to transforming this difficult area into a livable rural community with a vibrant rural landscape. The commune has invested in completing the irrigation canal system to bring freshwater from the Vinh Te canal to leach out acidity and improve the fields; the road system has been asphalted and concreted to over 96%. The commune focuses on restructuring the agricultural sector towards increasing added value, developing large-scale farming models, clean shrimp farming, sustainable rice-shrimp farming, smart agriculture, and expanding participation in the 1 million hectare high-quality rice project… To date, Giang Thanh has 19,882 hectares of rice, with an annual rice production of over 125,000 tons. Aquaculture production exceeds 9,600 tons per year. The total value of all sectors is expected to reach 2,104 billion VND by 2025.

Along with significant changes in agricultural production, Giang Thanh commune has also paid special attention to improving the lives and creating jobs for the Khmer people. As a commune with a large Khmer population, in recent years, using funds from national target programs such as the New Rural Development Program, sustainable poverty reduction, and economic development for ethnic minorities and mountainous areas, the local government has implemented projects to support livelihoods and create jobs for the Khmer people, thereby giving them opportunities to rise out of poverty and achieve sustainable poverty reduction. By 2025, the multidimensional poverty rate in the commune is expected to decrease to 2.64%.

Ms. Thi Tuot, residing in Tra Phot hamlet, shared: “My family received breeding cows from a livelihood support project under the national sustainable poverty reduction program. While raising the cows, I also buy fresh sedge grass, dry it, and sell it to the cooperative that weaves sedge grass to supplement my income. Thanks to hard work, my family has now escaped poverty.”

The changes we see today are the result of sound investment, appropriate policies, and a testament to the determination of the government and people of Giang Thanh commune to overcome difficulties.
