In recent weeks, the prices of many types of rice in the Mekong Delta have been steadily increasing, and farmers harvesting late summer-autumn rice crops in the Mekong Delta are very happy because they are getting good prices.
Currently, the 2024 autumn-winter rice crop of farmers in Can Tho City and many provinces in the Mekong Delta, although only in the heading, flowering, ripening, and preparing to ripen stages, has already attracted many traders and businesses who have placed deposits to purchase it at good prices.
Rice prices are rising.
Rice prices in the Mekong Delta have risen again by at least 200-1,200 VND/kg compared to the last weeks of June and the beginning of July 2024. This price increase is due to a sharp decrease in the supply of commercial rice, as the Mekong Delta region has entered the final stages of the 2024 summer-autumn rice harvest, while the autumn-winter rice crop has not yet begun to be harvested.

Rice exports continue to enjoy favorable conditions, with prices for many types of exported rice recently improving compared to previous months. In recent weeks, the export price of 5% broken rice from Vietnam has reached 575-579 USD/ton, while 25% broken rice is at 539-547 USD/ton.
According to the Vietnam Food Association, by the end of July 2024, Vietnam had exported 5.299 million tons of rice, worth 3.34 billion USD, an increase of 8.3% in volume and 27.65% in value compared to the same period in 2023. The projected rice exports for the whole year are over 7 million tons, as planned.
In many localities in the Mekong Delta (such as Dong Thap, An Giang, Tra Vinh ...), farmers recently sold their 2024 summer-autumn rice crop to traders and businesses at prices ranging from 8,200-8,800 VND/kg for fragrant rice varieties such as Jasmine 85, Dai Thom 8, and OM 18. Meanwhile, fresh IR 50404, OM 380, and OM 5451 rice from the 2024 summer-autumn crop were sold by farmers in many areas at prices ranging from 7,400-8,200 VND/kg.
Thanks to high rice prices, rice farmers in many areas can achieve profits of 2 million VND or more per hectare during the summer-autumn crop season.
Mr. Nguyen Si Hien, residing in Long Thanh hamlet, Phu Thanh A commune, Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province, stated: "My family just harvested 3 hectares of OM 18 rice in the 2024 summer-autumn crop, with a yield of nearly 6 tons per hectare. Fresh rice sold for 8,500 VND/kg, resulting in a profit of approximately 2.7 million VND per hectare. Although the yield wasn't high this season, the higher selling price compared to the previous winter-spring crop allowed me to achieve a profit level almost equal to that of the winter-spring crop. I am currently preparing to sow the autumn-winter crop and hope that rice prices will continue to remain high."
According to Mr. Hien, in the 2024 summer-autumn crop season, many rice fields of local farmers could achieve yields of 6-6.5 tons per hectare and sell at high prices, thus allowing them to earn a profit of 3-3.5 million VND per hectare, especially for areas producing two rice crops per year. Areas producing three rice crops per year usually have lower yields.
Aiming for a successful autumn-winter rice crop.
The sustained high price of rice has brought much joy to farmers in Can Tho City and many provinces in the Mekong Delta, giving them confidence in heading towards a successful autumn-winter rice crop.
Can Tho province completed the harvest of its 2024 summer-autumn rice crop quite early, in July 2024. Currently, the autumn-winter rice crop in the city is mainly in the heading, flowering, and ripening stages, with some areas preparing to ripen. Many autumn-winter rice crops in the city have already been reserved by traders who have agreed to purchase them at higher prices compared to the same period in previous years.
Farmers in many districts of the city reported that many traders are inquiring about and placing deposits to purchase fresh rice varieties such as OM 34, OM 5451, and OM 18 at harvest time, with prices ranging from 7,200 to 8,600 VND/kg.
Mr. Huynh Van Gioi from Truong Xuan commune, Thoi Lai district, said: "This autumn-winter crop, my 14 acres of rice were sown with OM 34 variety. The rice has passed the ripening stage and is expected to be harvested around September 8-9. In the last days of August 2024, many traders inquired about buying OM 34 rice with deposits at prices from 7,200-7,300 VND/kg or higher. However, because I had already secured deposits for the rice sale quite early in July 2024, I was able to get a lower price, only 7,000 VND/kg. Even so, the price of 7,000 VND/kg is still 200 VND/kg higher than the autumn-winter crop of the previous year."
"Hopefully, as we approach harvest time, rice prices will not fall but continue to rise or stabilize. This will allow traders to purchase rice quickly, helping farmers minimize the risks associated with ripe rice being left in the fields for too long."
According to Mr. Luu Quang Dinh in Thanh Phu commune, Co Do district, his family planted 3 hectares of OM 5451 rice in the 2024 autumn-winter crop. The rice is developing quite well with few pests and diseases, and it is likely to yield 700-800 kg of fresh rice per hectare (large plot). Recently, the price of OM 5451 rice has been purchased by traders in many places at 7,700-7,800 VND/kg, and in some places even up to 8,000 VND/kg. With this price, farmers producing rice in the autumn-winter crop are very confident of achieving good profits.
Recently, Vietnam's rice export situation has continued to be favorable, creating conditions for farmers to sell their rice at good prices. However, the situation of rice prices falling during peak harvest seasons is still likely to occur, especially when the capacity of small traders and businesses in many localities to purchase, dry, process, and store rice is still limited.
Therefore, relevant authorities need to continue to pay attention to and support farmers and businesses in promptly overcoming difficulties and limitations. They should also promptly implement a comprehensive set of solutions to stabilize product output and develop the rice industry sustainably. In particular, it is necessary to strengthen market information dissemination, support farmers in production linkages, and connect them with consuming units and businesses to ensure timely harvesting and consumption of the autumn-winter rice crop.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City, farmers in Can Tho have planted 68,521 hectares of rice for the 2024 autumn-winter crop, reaching 108% of the plan and 290 hectares more than the same period last year. Currently, 3% of the autumn-winter rice area is in the tillering stage, about 80% is in the heading to flowering stage, and about 17% is in the ripening stage. The rice is growing and developing well.
