French star Alain Delon, famous for films like "Purple Noon" and "Le Samouraï," has died at the age of 89.

Delon was one of the leading European actors of the latter half of the 20th century, having collaborated with renowned directors such as Jean-Pierre Melville, René Clément, and Jacques Deray. He also participated in projects by Luchino Visconti, Louis Malle, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Jean-Luc Godard. Despite his popularity with filmgoers in Europe, the artist was unsuccessful in his attempts at Hollywood.

Born in 1935 in Sceaux, a small town on the outskirts of Paris, the actor was expelled from school several times. At 14, he decided to leave school and work at his stepfather's slaughterhouse. In 1952, he joined the navy and fought in Indochina. Due to a lack of discipline in the military, he was imprisoned by the government for a year and discharged from the army in 1956. He was discovered by Hollywood film producer David O'Selznick in Cannes (France) and signed a contract. In 1957, the artist made his acting debut in a film.
