The People's Committee of Phu Tho province has requested a temporary halt to sand dredging on the Da River to monitor and accurately assess the impact of sand mining activities on the riverbed, banks, and floodplains in the bordering areas and the landslide-prone areas in Phong Van and Thai Hoa communes (Ba Vi district, Hanoi ).
According to local authorities, recently, dozens of sand dredging vessels have been operating at full capacity day and night, affecting the houses and boundary walls of 42 households in Phong Van commune.
In addition, Phu Tho province also assigned the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to clearly identify the areas where sand mining needs to be temporarily suspended and notify Tien Nga Co., Ltd. (the company licensed to mine sand).
At the same time, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Phu Tho province is tasked with working with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Hanoi to provide information on mines located in the border area between the two localities and to organize coordinated efforts to effectively manage mineral exploitation.
As Thanh Nien newspaper has reported, recently, in the area of Phu Tho province bordering Ba Vi district (specifically in Thai Hoa and Phong Van communes), sand mining on the Da and Hong rivers has been taking place openly and extensively. Dozens of sand dredging vessels operate at full capacity day and night. Numerous boats waiting to load sand are densely moored around the areas where the dredging vessels are operating.
According to statistics from the People's Committee of Phong Van commune, 42 households in Bai hamlet (Van Hoi village) were affected by cracks in their boundary walls, houses, and yards, including 19 houses with cracks ranging from 2 to 13 meters in length. The extensive cracking of their houses has caused fear among the residents.
In order to ensure the safety of the embankment on the right bank of the Red River, and the lives and property of the people in Van Hoi village, the People's Committee of Ba Vi District has requested the competent authorities to temporarily suspend sand dredging on the Da River.
According to expert data, two erosion pits have appeared in the Da River near the area where 19 houses have cracked. The riverbed in the erosion pit area has decreased by 3-5 meters compared to 2023.
