When wanting to change direction, the vehicle driver must slow down and signal the turn direction.
While changing direction, drivers and operators of special-use motorbikes must yield the right of way to pedestrians and cyclists who are traveling on their own reserved road, give way to oncoming vehicles and only allow the vehicle to change direction when it is observed that it does not cause obstacles or danger to other people and vehicles.
Thus, according to the provisions of the Road Traffic Law, before preparing to change direction (turning left or right), you must turn on the turn signal to notify the vehicles participating in traffic on either side or behind you. to actively give way or out of the way for you to change direction.
The initiative to turn on the lights to ask for a change before allowing the vehicle to change direction is regulated by law and is the responsibility of road users. Therefore, if you turn off the turn signal light when you have not crossed the street, it will no longer have any meaning and effect and will be penalized as an error of not turning on the turn signal.
Point a, Clause 3, Article 6 of Decree 100/2019 stipulates that the fine level for the act of turning a vehicle without turning on the signal is VND 400.000 - 600.000.
Cases where you have to turn signals
According to the provisions of Articles 14, 15, 16, 18 of the Law on Road Traffic 2008, the following cases must turn on the turn signals, including: Changing lanes; vehicle navigation (turn right, turn left, turn); please pass; for the vehicle to change the wheel from the parking position or run close to the sidewalk to stop the vehicle.
In addition, to make traffic more convenient, the Traffic Police Department recommends turning on the turn signals for situations such as:
– Going through the roundabout: Turn on the turn signal according to the principle of “in left, out right”.
– When entering the roundabout, turn left, when exiting the roundabout, turn right.
– Follow the curve: Drivers of vehicles entering the curve (not turning, changing direction, changing lanes) should turn on the turn signal light.
– Back into the alley: The signal should be turned on because the driver's visibility is limited, it is difficult to adjust the direction of the vehicle and to facilitate the movement of other vehicles.
– Go through the Y-junction: If there is a turn signal, turn on the signal light as usual. If there is no sign, but go straight to the right branch (from the foot of the letter Y up), there is no need to turn signal.
To ensure safety and be recognized by other vehicles, the driver should turn on the front turn signal about 25 - 30 meters before turning and maintain it for another 5 - 10 meters after turning in the straight position before turning. turn off. As a result, people traveling nearby will know when the vehicle is about to change direction and when it has finished. In addition, to ensure that the turn signals are always in good working order, they should be checked periodically and repaired immediately if there is a problem.
