According to sources from the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper on March 26, the Department of Internal Affairs of Can Tho City submitted to the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee a plan to merge the city's commune-level administrative units.

According to the proposed plans, after the merger, the city will have 21-24 communes and wards, which previously comprised 80 commune-level administrative units. Within this merger, Ninh Kieu District will have a ward named Ninh Kieu Ward.
Ninh Kieu is a famous landmark in Can Tho. Many people know Can Tho through the song "Coming to Ninh Kieu wharf, one sees a girl waiting for her lover." At the same time, Ninh Kieu district is also the central district of Can Tho, where the city's administrative center is located.
Previously, on November 19, 2024, the People's Committee of Ninh Kieu District announced the Resolution of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on the rearrangement of commune-level administrative units of Can Tho City, giai đoạn 2023 – 2025, establishing Thoi Binh Ward.
Thoi Binh Ward was established by merging four wards: An Cu, An Nghiep, An Phu, and Thoi Binh (formerly). After this merger, Ninh Kieu District was reduced from 13 wards to 8 wards.
