According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Mexico, the march was organized by the National Coordinator of Teachers Workers (CNTE) – an organization representing a segment of teachers who hold opposing views to the mainstream education union. Since last week, the CNTE has continuously organized large-scale protests in Mexico City demanding higher wages and the repeal of the current pension law.

According to the initial plan, the protesters intended to approach the stadium area to continue presenting their demands. However, authorities deployed a large-scale security operation with thousands of police officers, roadblocks, and concrete barriers to prevent protesters from reaching the Azteca Stadium. The teachers then gathered on the streets near the blockaded area, held a rally, and dispersed after nearly three hours of protest.

Speaking to reporters, Mexico City's security chief, Pablo Vázquez, said the protest was peaceful, emphasizing that authorities ensured public order and the people's right to express themselves.

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed that the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Cup will still proceed as planned despite the anticipated protests in the coming days, while rejecting the possibility of using police force to suppress the demonstrators. The female politician emphasized that the Mexican government is addressing the remaining issues through dialogue and negotiation.

Mexico is one of three co-hosting nations for the 2026 World Cup, along with the United States and Canada. This marks the third time this Latin American country has hosted the world's biggest football tournament, following the 1970 and 1986 World Cups. The tournament will take place from June 11th to July 19th. In addition to preparations for the tournament, the Mexican government is currently working diligently on upgrading its subway system, transportation infrastructure, and international airport to accommodate the large influx of tourists expected during the World Cup.
