The 2026 Thai Nguyen tourism season, themed "The Symphony of Lakes on the Mountains - Tea in the Clouds," opens up opportunities for the development of community-based tourism in the locality.
Thai Nguyen is known for Nui Coc Lake with its legendary love story of Coc and Cong; Ba Be Lake - the largest natural freshwater lake in Vietnam, an ASEAN heritage site, a special national scenic site, and recognized by UNESCO as Vietnam's third Ramsar site (wetland); Thai Nguyen is known as the "Finest Tea" with its vast, gently sloping green tea plantations; and many ethnic groups live there with their unique traditional cultures.
The image of lakes nestled amidst vast forests, lush green tea hills, and distinctive cultural identity create a unique "Lake on the Mountain - Tea in the Clouds" symphony of Thai Nguyen province. This includes the appeal of community-based tourism in Thai Nguyen.
Located on the outskirts of Thai Nguyen city, once voted the best tourist village in the world by the United Nations Tourism Organization, nestled in a peaceful rural area, nestled under green trees are traditional stilt houses. The village's lifestyle is almost entirely self-sufficient, reflecting the unique culture of its simple, honest people untouched by market forces. In this "slow living" environment, Thai Hai Tourist Village in Tan Cuong commune welcomes tens of thousands of visitors each year. At times, however, visitor numbers have to be limited to protect infrastructure, preserve the natural landscape, and maintain the community's culture for sustainable development.
In recent years, the people of Tan Cuong, a region known for its specialty tea, have gradually developed tea-related tourism, combining tea tasting with product promotion and introduction. For example, on weekends, holidays, and Tet (Lunar New Year), the Hao Dat Tea Cooperative welcomes many tourist groups to experience the process of caring for, harvesting, processing, packaging, and selling tea, and provides a traditional setting for visitors to enjoy tea. This offers interesting experiences about the tea-growing landscape, the tea industry, the lives of tea farmers, and promotes OCOP-certified teas (4-star and 5-star), leading to increased awareness and sales of high-quality tea.
The meticulously designed and aesthetically pleasing space, featuring displays of gemstone paintings, feng shui stones, jewelry, high-class ornamental plants, a harmonious koi fish pond, a shopping center, and a circular, organic agricultural farm producing green products, clean food, and diverse cuisine, has been honored by the Vietnam Tourism Association as a "Typical Ecotourism Destination" and a "Green Label Tourism Destination." For a long time, the Dung Tan Trade and Tourism Center in Song Cong ward has been well-known, attracting tens of thousands of tourists annually and providing employment and income for local residents.
The magnificent scenery of Ba Be Lake, with its clear blue water, lush green forests on the rocky mountains, cool and fresh climate, and the villages of Pac Ngoi and Coc Toc by the lake, inhabited by the Tay ethnic people, are simple, sincere, hospitable, and possess a unique traditional culture characterized by their clothing, customs, the smooth and graceful sli dance, the melodious tinh instrument, distinctive cuisine, and comfortable accommodation, offering a delightful experience of nature, scenery, people, and a slow-paced life in the lake region.

Local culture and traditional architecture in the area have the potential to develop community tourism. For example, Khuân Bang village in Chợ Mới commune, with nearly 60 households, mainly of the Tay ethnic group, has successfully promoted its cultural identity, preserved traditional stilt houses and landscapes, and organized community tourism destinations. The local authorities are researching and developing distinctive tourism products linked to the Tay ethnic group's culture, cuisine, experiences of local life, and natural ecological spaces.
The villages of Na Bay and Na Hong in Dong Phuc commune enjoy a cool climate year-round, with many ancient tea hills located at high altitudes, often covered in clouds, creating a unique and rare landscape; the traditional methods of making leaf yeast and brewing rượu (rice wine) have been passed down through many generations.
In a recent exchange with local residents, Thai Nguyen Provincial Party Secretary Trinh Xuan Truong suggested a development direction for an experiential tourism model called "tea in the clouds," set amidst the ancient Shan Tuyet tea region, local cultural space, and eco-tourism products that will satisfy tourists.
The Ba Be Lake area boasts unique natural landscapes with a rich ecosystem of forests, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls; many areas still retain traditional village spaces, making it suitable for developing ecotourism, resort tourism, and community cultural experiences. This is a unique advantage that not every locality possesses, making it an attractive tourism product with depth and a distinct character that appeals to visitors.
