The son of the villagers
Born and raised in Km14 village in a large, impoverished family, Dr. Nguyen Van Hao experienced hardship and deprivation early on, where hunger, poverty, and outdated customs prevailed, and access to modern healthcare was a distant dream. Therefore, his dream of becoming a doctor to treat his fellow villagers grew stronger from his days studying diligently at the ethnic minority boarding school until he was admitted to Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

After six years of studying general medicine at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Dr. Nguyen Van Hao returned to work at the Lam Thuy Commune Health Station in the former Le Thuy District, bordering Vietnam and Laos. After five years of service, he continued his studies in obstetrics and gynecology and participated in numerous professional development courses to enhance his expertise. While many chose to work in large hospitals in the city, Dr. Hao returned to his hometown. For him, returning to serve his homeland was not only a responsibility of a doctor, but also an expression of gratitude to the land and people who nurtured him.
Through his approachable and sincere approach, Dr. Hao gradually changed the perceptions of the local people. Under his leadership, the Ngan Thuy Health Station became a trusted place for medical examination and treatment. When they were sick, the villagers no longer sought out shamans or witch doctors, but instead turned to the team of doctors and medical staff for examination and treatment.
Ms. Ho Thi Con from Km14 village shared: “This year I am 87 years old. Because of old age, I often get sick. Every time that happens, I go to see Doctor Hao. Doctor Hao is very kind, like a son in the family, he knows how to diagnose my illness and gives me medicine to treat it. After taking the medicine Doctor Hao gives me, I get better right away.”
Ms. Ho Thi Nang from Km14 village said: “My family, like other villagers, always go to the health station for treatment whenever we are sick. Besides providing good patient care, Dr. Hao and the medical team here regularly visit the villages to educate and encourage people to maintain environmental hygiene, eat cooked food, drink boiled water, use clean water, and sleep under mosquito nets… Thanks to this, the villages are becoming cleaner, more beautiful, and more civilized than before.”
Journey back to the village
Following Dr. Nguyen Van Hao and the staff of the Ngan Thuy Health Station to Coi Da village, one of the most disadvantaged villages in Kim Ngan commune. Coi Da village has no electricity, no phone signal, and lacks television reception... the most effective method of communication is "going door to door".
Trips to remote villages to disseminate knowledge about disease prevention also provide opportunities for Dr. Hao and his colleagues to encourage people to abandon outdated customs such as self-medicating with herbal remedies or inviting shamans to perform rituals when they are sick. Dr. Hao's persistence and sincerity have helped the people become more open to modern medical knowledge and trust the examination and treatment provided by local healthcare workers. In the highland villages of Kim Ngan, every injection, every pill, and every gentle word of advice from Dr. Nguyen Van Hao is imbued with love, compassion, and sharing.
Mr. Ho Van Nheng from Coi Da village said: "Every time Doctor Hao comes, the village rejoices like a festival. Everyone who goes to the forest or down to the stream tries to return to be examined and treated by the medical staff . Doctor Hao is like a son of the village; he speaks the Bru-Van Kieu language, so the people easily understand, listen to, and follow his instructions."

Not only is he dedicated to serving the community, but as Deputy Director of the Kim Ngan Commune Health Station, Dr. Nguyen Van Hao is also an exemplary leader and a highly responsible healthcare worker. The grassroots healthcare system, especially in mountainous areas like Kim Ngan commune, constantly faces pressure due to shortages of personnel and equipment. One person often has to handle multiple tasks, from medical examinations and disease prevention to vaccinations, population communication, and many other unnamed duties. Under these conditions, Dr. Hao is always a source of moral support, readily accompanying his colleagues to overcome difficulties and fulfill their duties.
“For over 10 years of dedication, overcoming the challenges of healthcare shortages in the highlands, the greatest motivation keeping Dr. Nguyen Van Hao of the Bru-Van Kieu ethnic group here is the trust of the people and the peace in each village. Dr. Hao always remembers President Ho Chi Minh's teaching: 'A good doctor must be like a loving mother,'” said Nguyen Van Hung, Vice Chairman of the Kim Ngan Commune People's Committee.
It was his dedication and sense of responsibility that yielded well-deserved results. Under Dr. Hao's leadership, local grassroots healthcare has undergone a significant transformation; people's awareness has been raised, diseases are controlled, and the expanded immunization rate is consistently maintained.
