From being deeply concerned about patients' worries to a passion for scientific research.
Dr. Pham Tran Xuan Anh (58 years old) developed a love for medicine from his childhood. He still clearly remembers the image of his mother, Mrs. Tran Thi Tan, a dedicated nurse who daily wore a white coat and diligently cared for patients.
In the memories of that young boy, the hospital was not just a place for healing, but also a place where compassion spread, where doctors silently sacrificed themselves for the lives of others. These simple experiences nurtured his love for medicine and guided his path of dedication.
After graduating and working in the healthcare industry, Dr. Xuan Anh held various specialized positions. Regardless of his role, he always maintained a high sense of responsibility, readily taking on challenging and new tasks, especially in the field of surgery and the treatment of complex trauma cases.
Over three decades in the profession have also been the time he has witnessed countless pains and losses suffered by patients and their families. Sleepless nights in the operating room, tense emergency cases fighting to save patients' lives have become an indispensable part of the life of a doctor.
What troubles Dr. Xuan Anh is not only the professional challenges but also the difficult circumstances of many patients, especially the poor in remote areas. According to him, behind each case is a story of making a living, worries about hospital fees, travel costs, and prolonged treatment time.
"Many patients not only worry about their treatment but also struggle to find enough money to continue it. Every time I witness that, I wonder if there's any way to help them alleviate their burden," shared Dr. Xuan Anh.
Driven by these concerns, he and his colleagues began diligently researching and exploring new technical solutions suitable for the practical conditions at lower-level medical facilities. For Dr. Xuan Anh, scientific research is not about topics detached from reality, but rather about stemming from the daily treatment needs and the difficulties faced by patients and colleagues.

From 2003 to the present, Dr. Pham Tran Xuan Anh has led and participated in 18 scientific research projects and technical innovations that have been approved at the institutional level. Many of these projects have been presented and discussed at national and international scientific conferences. Numerous of his research works have been directly applied to practical treatment at Da Nang Hospital, yielding significant results and contributing to improving the quality of medical examination and treatment for people in the Central and Central Highlands regions.
Throughout his research, he always emphasized teamwork, sharing experiences, and supporting younger colleagues. According to him, medical science can only develop through continuity and succession between generations of doctors, all working towards the common goal of better serving patients.
Humanistic medical solutions, spreading the values of the medical profession.
One of Dr. Xuan Anh's most notable and cherished research projects is the reconstruction of the forearm and hand using skin from the lower abdomen and pelvis. This is a significant solution for treating upper limb injuries – a common type of injury resulting from traffic accidents, workplace accidents, and daily life activities.
According to Doctor Xuan Anh, many cases of upper limb injuries involve complex damage, and if not treated promptly and correctly, they can lead to amputation, seriously affecting the patient's ability to work and quality of life.
At central-level hospitals, these cases can be treated with modern microsurgery techniques; however, at lower-level facilities, the application of microsurgery faces many difficulties due to a lack of specialized personnel and the high cost of equipment.
Faced with this situation, Dr. Xuan Anh researched a method using a pedicled skin flap from the lower abdomen, nourished by a stable arterial system, ensuring a consistent blood supply. This solution helps preserve the limb, limit complications, shorten treatment time, and significantly reduce costs for patients. Importantly, the technique can be effectively implemented at lower-level hospitals, contributing to reducing the burden of referrals and enabling people to receive treatment locally.

This project won first prize at the Da Nang City Science and Technology Innovation Competition, second prize at the national level, and was honored in the Golden Book of Vietnamese Innovation. More importantly, the initiative has been and is being applied in practice, bringing practical benefits to many patients.
For his enduring contributions to public health care and the development of medical science, Dr. Pham Tran Xuan Anh has been awarded many prestigious prizes: the Vietnam Science and Technology Innovation Award in 2019 and 2022; a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister; the Third-Class Labor Medal; and the title of Outstanding Intellectual of the Vietnam Medical Association.
Most recently, he was awarded a Certificate of Exemplary Achievement in the Patriotic Emulation Movement for the period 2020-2025 by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor.
Not only is Dr. Xuan Anh a highly skilled physician and dedicated scientist, but he is also an inspiring mentor to many generations of young medical professionals. He always emphasizes the importance of medical ethics, a spirit of learning, and compassion in his professional journey.
"As long as doctors still know how to ask 'why' and 'how' before addressing each patient's problem, the flame of passion for the profession will continue to burn," he shared.
Dr. Le Duc Nhan, Director of Da Nang Hospital, stated that Dr. Pham Tran Xuan Anh, M.Sc., is a highly outstanding administrator who has made significant contributions to the hospital's development. Dr. Xuan Anh possesses strong professional skills, profound scientific thinking, a high sense of responsibility, and always prioritizes the well-being of patients. His research and initiatives are highly practical, contributing to improved treatment quality, reduced costs, and shorter hospital stays for patients.
In his capacity as Deputy Director, Dr. Xuan Anh demonstrated effective leadership and management skills, exemplary medical ethics, and dedication to training and mentoring the next generation of doctors. The hospital leadership highly appreciates and acknowledges Dr. Pham Tran Xuan Anh's sustained and long-term contributions to the public health care industry.

The image of Dr. Pham Tran Xuan Anh quietly working at the operating table, diligently pursuing research topics, or wholeheartedly guiding younger colleagues is a vivid testament to the spirit of "a good doctor is like a loving mother." His silent but persistent contributions not only help improve the quality of local healthcare but also spread the positive values of Vietnamese doctors in the era of reform and integration.
