According to information from Bai Chay Hospital ( Quang Ninh ), the unit has successfully performed four endoscopic surgeries to remove esophageal cancer and lymph nodes – a difficult and specialized technique that is usually only routinely performed at central-level hospitals.
A typical case is patient Dinh KG (59 years old, Quang Ha commune, Quang Ninh province) who was admitted to the hospital with persistent difficulty swallowing. Through gastrointestinal endoscopy and advanced diagnostic techniques, doctors discovered a lesion in the middle third of the esophagus with signs of malignancy. Biopsy results confirmed that the patient had squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus.

The surgical team, led by Dr. Nguyen Van Dung – Head of Oncology Department 1, performed the laparoscopic surgery.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Nguyen Van Dung – Head of Oncology Department 1, and his colleagues, performed thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgery, radical esophagectomy, gastric tube reconstruction, and lymph node dissection. This is a complex technique requiring a high level of expertise and close coordination between surgical and anesthesiology/resuscitation specialties.
The surgery was performed in three stages: thoracoscopic esophagectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection; laparoscopic gastric tube reconstruction while preserving the feeding vessels; and a left cervical esophagectomy, placement of the gastric tube in the neck, and esophagogastric anastomosis. The entire process was safe, the cancerous lesion was completely removed, and digestive continuity was successfully restored.
Following the surgery, the patient recovered well and is in stable condition.

Following surgery, the patient received intensive care and treatment, and their health recovered well.
According to Dr. Nguyen Van Dung, compared to traditional open surgery, minimally invasive laparoscopic esophagectomy offers many superior benefits such as reduced pain, less blood loss, less impact on respiration, shorter hospital stay, and reduced risk of postoperative complications. In particular, the magnifying endoscopy system allows surgeons to clearly observe the lesion, improving the efficiency of tumor removal and lymph node dissection.
Therefore, doctors advise that esophageal cancer often has subtle symptoms and is easily overlooked. People should pay attention to signs such as persistent difficulty swallowing or choking; proactively undergo regular health checkups, especially those with risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and chronic esophagitis. Early detection and timely intervention are crucial in improving treatment effectiveness and extending the lifespan of patients.
