After leaving the military and returning to his hometown, Mr. Nguyen Duc Tri (born in 1959), residing in Tan Kien village, Trieu Ai commune, Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province, quickly set about developing his family's economy . Thanks to his ability to choose crops suitable for the local climate and soil, his family gradually rose to achieve legitimate wealth.

“Upholding the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers, Mr. Tri has overcome difficulties to develop his family's economy and raise his children to become useful citizens for society. Besides that, he always actively participates in local movements and activities of the association. He is one of the exemplary figures of successful economic development, rising out of poverty and achieving legitimate wealth, for other veterans to learn from and follow,” commented Phan Van Hoi, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Trieu Ai commune, when he took us to visit the economic model of one of his members.

What appeared before us was a spacious, sturdy house and a lush, fruit-laden garden. This was the result of many years of hard work by Mr. Tri and his wife. Coming from a poor farming family and having been trained in the military, he always had the will and determination to improve his life. In 1982, after being discharged from the army with nothing, he started his own business with his family's traditional occupation: rice farming.

However, after a few years, the economic results were not as expected, so Mr. Tri explored switching to other crops. “Through research, I realized that pepper was a suitable crop to grow in hilly areas. With the small amount of capital I had, I cut down trees, planted stakes, and invested in planting about 3 acres of pepper. Thanks to the income from pepper, my wife and I later had more funds to expand our farming on our plot,” Mr. Tri confided.

To achieve high efficiency in production, he actively learned from the experiences of others through mass media and from some households in and outside the commune who continued to diversify their crops. After much hard work and effort, his family now owns 2 hectares of melaleuca forest. In addition to pepper, he also grows a variety of other crops in his garden land, including: 100 dragon fruit trees; 4.5 acres of wild myrtle; 70 lemon trees; and pineapples interspersed with various vegetables and short-term crops, following the principle of "using short-term gains to support long-term growth" to increase income.

According to Mr. Tri, modern agriculture requires a scientific approach, understanding of the soil and the characteristics of each crop. Therefore, from the beginning, he classified the crops into separate areas, with wide pathways in between for easy care, fertilization, and harvesting. Thanks to good care and adherence to proper technical procedures, his family's orchard achieves high yields and produces delicious, high-quality produce that is popular with local people.

Introducing us to his family's 4.5 sao (approximately 450 square meters) of wild myrtle bushes, he shared: "Wild myrtle is a shrub that thrives in sunlight, tolerates harsh weather conditions, and can grow even in barren soil. After planting, my family mainly focuses on weeding and fertilizing, so the plants grow quickly and bear fruit. Myrtle flowers around April-May and ripen around July, with the harvesting period lasting for 3 months."

Mr. Tri said: "In the recent sim fruit harvest, my family sold about 40,000 VND per finished sim fruit product. Wild sim fruit doesn't require much care and yields a lot of fruit. Sim fruit can be used to process various products such as sim wine, sim jam, sim syrup, and sim fruit-based beverages, so the economic efficiency is relatively high."

Besides farming, Mr. Tri and his wife previously also raised livestock on a large scale, including chickens, ducks, buffaloes, and cows. Thanks to this, Mr. Tri was able to provide his children with a good education. In recent years, due to declining health, they have focused solely on developing their orchard. On average, this economic model brings Mr. Tri's family an income of approximately 220 million VND per year.

Not only is he a successful businessman, but he is also a sociable and approachable person, always ready to help with capital and share production experience with the people, especially struggling war veterans in the area. With his dynamism in economic development and wealth creation, and his active participation in social movements, Mr. Tri has been recognized and rewarded many times by the local authorities and the War Veterans Association at all levels.

“When I was young, I dedicated my intellect and strength to fighting off the enemy; developing the family economy, and raising my children and sending them to school. Now that I'm older, I find joy in farming and tending my garden. I wish for nothing more than good health, because as long as I have health, I can continue to contribute to building my homeland,” Mr. Tri said.
