For many years now, a considerable number of ethnic minority people in Kon Plông district have earned additional income and improved their lives by performing gong music and traditional dances for tourists .

By day, Y Duân (22 years old, Kon Chênh village, Măng Cành commune) is a busy farmer planting rice in the fields. But in the evening, she transforms into a gentle Mơ Nâm girl in traditional attire, dancing the xoang dance to the rhythm of the gongs. Y Duân considers xoang dancing a part-time job; she started dancing in high school, but back then, she only performed occasionally for groups of tourists. After graduating from high school and joining the village's gong ensemble, she began performing regularly and earning an income.

“This season is a bit slow for tourists, so we only get a few groups a month, but during holidays and festivals, it's very crowded, especially when Mang Den town has a festival. The income from performing the Xoang dance is decent because it depends on the number of groups we serve; the members get paid more or less. In slow months, it's only a few hundred thousand dong, but during holidays and festivals, it can reach several million dong a month. This money helps me cover my living expenses, family living costs, and gasoline for my motorbike to go to the fields,” said Ms. Y Duan happily.

Mr. A Le, the leader of the Kon Chenh village gong team, said that the team was established in 2013 and still maintains 18 members who regularly practice and perform. Since the beginning of the year, the village's gong team has performed more than 20 times at hotels and restaurants in Mang Den town. For each performance, the team receives 2-3 million VND, which is then divided equally among the members. Although this amount is small, it helps the members earn extra income to support their families.

As for the gong and dance troupe of Kon Pring village (Mang Den town), many members have a stable income from participating in the team. A Henh (30 years old, Kon Pring village) is one of the 10 male members of the village's gong and dance troupe. A Henh was originally a farmer who spent his days working in the rice fields, earning very little. In 2020, he joined the village's gong and dance troupe; since then, he has always actively practiced and performed with the team every single day.

According to Mr. A Hênh, the village's gong ensemble has 25 members, all farmers whose income depends solely on cassava cultivation. When the gong ensemble was formed, everyone in the village happily agreed to join. With the establishment of the ensemble, members not only earn income but also preserve and protect the traditional cultural beauty of their ethnic group. Before each performance, the ensemble leader and members meticulously prepare everything, from sound and lighting to firewood and rice wine, to ensure the best possible service for tourists and to leave a lasting impression of Mơ Nâm culture.

Since the beginning of the year, the Kon Pring village gong team has performed nearly 70 times, with each member earning an average of 100,000-200,000 VND. "On average, I earn about 2 million VND per month," said Mr. A Hênh.

According to Mr. Dinh Tam, Deputy Head of the Culture and Information Department of Kon Plong District, gong and Xoang dance culture has been used for community tourism in villages since 2013, but at that time it was still spontaneous and small-scale. Currently, there are 8 semi-professional gong and drum teams from villages in the area that regularly perform for tourists.

Typically, gong and Xoang dance performances are held in the late afternoon or evening. Tourist groups from all over the country arriving at hotels and restaurants in Mang Den town will be treated to performances by gong and Xoang dance troupes. Afterwards, tourists are invited to join in the Xoang dance to the rhythm of the gongs around a warm campfire, enjoying rice wine and local specialties while dancing, a truly delightful experience for visitors.
