On May 24, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a meeting of the Government Standing Committee to listen to reports, assess the situation and give instructions after the second round of negotiations on the bilateral reciprocal trade agreement between Vietnam and the US. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Ministers and leaders of many ministries, branches, central agencies and members of the negotiating delegation.
Previously, the second round of negotiations took place from May 19 to 22 in Washington, DC - USA, led by Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien.
The Prime Minister highly appreciated the efforts, careful preparation and synchronous coordination of ministries, branches and localities during the negotiation process. At the same time, he acknowledged that the Negotiation Delegation had seriously implemented the direction of the Politburo , the Secretariat, the General Secretary and the Government, ensuring the correct foreign policy orientation and national interests.
According to the Prime Minister, the recent rounds of negotiations have achieved initial positive results. The two sides have had the opportunity to exchange and share information, circumstances and perspectives, thereby creating understanding, consensus and shaping new directions for the next rounds of negotiations.
Notably, in addition to official negotiations, Vietnamese ministries, sectors and enterprises have also proactively contacted and worked with the US side in many flexible forms, contributing to promoting the negotiation process and deepening the Vietnam - US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The Prime Minister directed to continue to strengthen inter-sectoral coordination, ensuring full and timely provision of information to the negotiating delegation. At the same time, encourage domestic enterprises to promote trade, selectively increase imports of US products that are strong and Vietnam has demand for, such as Boeing aircraft, LNG, agricultural products, etc. Thereby contributing to balancing the bilateral trade balance.
The Head of Government requested relevant ministries and branches such as the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment... to proactively handle issues related to projects of interest to the US, creating favorable conditions to promote substantive cooperation.
Regarding the upcoming orientation, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to continue negotiations based on the reality and Vietnam's ability to respond, while maintaining basic principles, especially core national interests. The goal is to achieve a balanced, mutually beneficial agreement, contributing to deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, bringing practical benefits to the people and businesses of the two countries, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development of the region and the world.
There must be appropriate and effective plans and measures to continue negotiations, and efforts should be made to declare the end of negotiations as soon as possible.
Previously, according to news from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, at the end of the second round of negotiations, Vietnam and the US made positive progress, identifying groups of issues that reached consensus or had similar views, and groups of issues that needed to continue to be discussed to reach agreement in the coming time.
