The French President's office announced that Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne has resigned after 20 months in power but will continue to handle related duties until a new government is formed.
France 24 television, citing the French President's office on January 8 (local time), reported: "Elisabeth Borne submitted her resignation to President Emmanuel Macron today, and Macron accepted it."
French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced her resignation as President Emmanuel Macron prepares to unveil a long-awaited cabinet reshuffle aimed at energizing his second term ahead of the European Parliament elections and the Paris Olympics this summer.
President Macron thanked Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne for her service. "Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne carried out her duties in the best interests of France. She implemented reforms with courage and determination. I am wholeheartedly grateful to her," Macron said.
President Macron fueled speculation of a government reshuffle in December 2023 by promising a new political initiative, after France was plagued by political crises following controversial pension reforms and immigration laws in 2023.
Ms. Borne will continue to serve as Prime Minister of France until her successor is appointed.
Borne was appointed in May 2022 after Macron was re-elected for a second term. She is the second female prime minister in French history.
