Speaking on television, Prime Minister Sanchez said he had informed King Felipe VI of the decision to dissolve parliament and called for an early general election on July 23.
He emphasized that in his role as the head of the Government and Chairman of the PSOE, as well as based on the results of the local elections, he believes that it is necessary to meet the aspirations of the people.
Thus, the general election will take place after Spain takes over the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) on July 1.
In the local elections on May 28, considered a test for the general election scheduled for later this year, Prime Minister Sanchez's PSOE and his allied Podemos party lost to their opponent, the Democratic Party. The People's (PP) conservative opposition and far-right party Vox.
Specifically, in the city council election, PP received more than 7 million votes (equivalent to 31,52%), PSOE received nearly 6,3 million votes (28,11%). At the regional level, the PP party also achieved remarkable results when it received support in the 6 regions that the PSOE once controlled.
Since taking office in 2018, Prime Minister Sanchez has faced a number of difficulties such as soaring inflation, declining purchasing power in the eurozone's fourth-largest economy.
