The 18-year-old lieutenant of the missile brigade, when the HD-981 oil rig was illegally towed into Vietnamese waters, was filled with the burning question of what he could do for his country. His dream of becoming a naval soldier has now come true.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Nguyen Duc Vinh joined Brigade 679 (Naval Region 1) - a coastal defense missile unit . A prominent young figure in the brigade, Lieutenant Nguyen Duc Vinh currently holds the position of head of the brigade's technical station.

I met Vinh in the late summer sun, his face glistening with sweat as he diligently performed his duties at the missile brigade 's technical station. Many officers at the station are seasoned veterans, but when Vinh is mentioned, everyone speaks fondly of this young, hardworking, diligent, and enthusiastic lieutenant.
Vinh recounted that in his early days at the brigade, there were so many new things to learn. Along with his existing knowledge, he chose to learn from his commanders and comrades. "It was thanks to the senior officers with their extensive knowledge and experience gained over many years of service that they shared their insights, guided me, and helped me quickly grasp the assigned tasks," Vinh expressed.
But how to maximize the technical and tactical capabilities of weapons and equipment during the process of mastering, exploiting, and using them is always a concern for new recruits.
In search of an answer to that question, he registered three models over three consecutive years: a simulation of the operation of a K-class vehicle during missile testing, a device for testing the gyroscope on the P-28 missile, and a simulation of the operation of the autonomous system on the P-28M missile.
In addition to his specialized knowledge, Vinh applied microcontroller and programming techniques to conduct in-depth research into the theoretical basis of the equipment and the content that needed to be implemented. Vinh said the most difficult part was finding research materials. Thanks to his relatively good command of English and Russian, Vinh was able to independently research and find some relevant documents. After many trials and adjustments, the model is now complete and has been applied at the brigade.
"As someone who diligently researches and develops, I am naturally very proud that the model has been supported and implemented by my superiors, comrades, and colleagues. This joy motivates me to continue registering to implement other models, as a way for me to contribute to improving the quality of training and combat readiness in the unit," Vinh said.

The young man, originally from Thuy Nguyen (Hai Phong), boasted that he had been fascinated by movies about missiles, weapons, and military equipment since childhood. At the time when public opinion was raging over the illegal HD-981 oil rig in Vietnam's exclusive economic zone , Vinh was a 12th-grade student and asked himself what he could do to contribute to his country.
No one in his family was in the military, but his parents strongly supported his aspiration to enroll in the Naval Academy, and were also a little proud that "he was thinking big." Vinh jokingly said that perhaps his "natural science " aptitude was put to good use, because once he entered the academy, he felt compelled to delve deeper into missile technology, military weapons, and technical equipment.
It was the disciplined environment of the military that forged in this young man from the port city the resilience and independence that enabled Vinh to always seek opportunities to learn, accumulate soft skills, and develop his strengths.
Assigned to work at Brigade 679, Vinh always chose a proactive attitude from his first day at the unit. Whenever there was a training plan, he quickly studied the curriculum and researched materials to thoroughly understand the training content, then proactively drafted specific and detailed lesson plans according to the instructions of his superiors.
This helps him keep up-to-date with the content, organization, and training methods, enabling him to master the lesson plans, prepare model teams, and manage training grounds to achieve the highest training effectiveness.
Surprisingly, Vinh's current English and Russian language skills are due to his diligent self-study. When his unit established foreign language clubs for officers and soldiers, Vinh immediately registered to participate in order to improve his language proficiency. "I consider it a duty because it serves both my professional work, allows me to research in-depth materials, and enhances my communication and international integration skills," Vinh confided.
