On May 20th, the BWF updated its latest badminton rankings, and Thai player Pitchamon Opatniputh was unable to move up any places despite her recent strong form.
With 44,378 points, Pitchamon remains at 27th place in the world women's singles rankings. Meanwhile, Thuy Linh, with 48,630 points, has moved up one place to 21st in the world.
Over the past two months, Thùy Linh has participated in three international tournaments, with her best achievement being reaching the quarterfinals at the Orleans Masters, a Super 300 series tournament.
Meanwhile, Pitchamon has only participated in two tournaments in the past two months. Despite having a very consistent performance – runner-up at the Orleans Masters and reaching the semi-finals of the Thailand Open (a Super 500 tournament) – Pitchamon has not accumulated many points due to the limited number of tournaments.
At 19, this is considered a fairly sound strategy for Pitchamon. She maintains a "slow but steady" approach, and although she doesn't participate in many races, she consistently goes far in Super 300 and Super 500 events.
In just the past year, Pitchamon has finished as runner-up three times and in the top four once in Super 300-500 series races.
For Thùy Linh, the relatively safe points lead over Pitchamon gives the Vietnamese player a slight advantage in the coming period.
A prime example is the ongoing Malaysia Masters, where Thuy Linh is seeded number 7, thus facing a relatively easy opponent in the first round. Pitchamon, on the other hand, has to face the strong Tanvi Sharma from India.
Meanwhile, the top 10 rankings for both men's and women's singles remained unchanged this past week, with Shi Yu Qi leading in men's singles and An Se Young dominating in women's singles.
