Jota had recently undergone surgery for a collapsed lung, and his doctor advised him against flying to avoid putting pressure on his lungs. The car had a tire blowout while accelerating to overtake another vehicle, veered off the road, and caught fire.

Jota recently won the Premier League with Liverpool last season and the Nations League with Portugal last month.
