The 28-year-old star and his younger brother were involved in an accident as their car was leaving the Portuguese-Spanish border in the early hours of July 3rd. He and Andre Silva were driving to Santander (Spain), where there was a ferry to England. Jota had recently undergone surgery for a collapsed lung, and his doctor advised him against flying to avoid putting pressure on his lungs. The car had a tire blowout while accelerating to overtake another vehicle, veered off the road, and caught fire.
Jota recently won the Premier League with Liverpool last season and the Nations League with Portugal last month.
