A new feature recently discovered in the iOS 26 beta shows that Apple is expanding its protection measures for users when making video calls, especially with the FaceTime application. Accordingly, if the system detects that a person in the call begins to undress or expose nudity, the audio and video of the call will automatically freeze.
The feature was initially announced by Apple as part of a series of updates for child accounts when it launched iOS 26 in June. Specifically, Apple said it would expand the Communication Safety feature to intervene when it detects sensitive content such as nudity in messages, shared images, or in FaceTime calls.
However, as discovered by iDeviceHelp, this feature in the beta version does not seem to be limited to child accounts. Adults may also experience calls being placed on hold if the system detects inappropriate images. FaceTime will present the option for users to continue the call or disconnect themselves.
At present, analysts are not sure whether this is Apple's intention to expand the scope of protection or just a bug in the testing phase. The company has also not made an official statement regarding whether this feature will be applied to all users when iOS 26 is officially released.
According to Apple, the tools in the Safe Communications feature operate entirely on the device. This means that video calls, images, or messages are not sent to servers and the company does not have access to users' personal data.
Specifically, the Safe Communication feature uses machine learning to analyze photos and videos directly on the device to detect nudity, ensuring privacy and security. This is part of the iPhone maker's efforts to enhance the digital safety experience, especially in the context of more and more minors using iPhones for online communication and entertainment.
iOS 26 is expected to be released this fall alongside new iPhone models. In addition to the FaceTime changes, the update will also bring a new interface design like Liquid Glass, improvements to Messages, Wallet, CarPlay, and more.
