This is the result of research by a collaborative team from the Aston AIPT Photonics Institute (UK), the National Institute of Information and Technology (NICT) of Japan, and Nokia Bell Laboratories of the United States. The scientists used optical fibers (tiny, tubular glass fibers) capable of transmitting information via light at speeds unmatched by copper cables. This was combined with the development of new wavelengths never before used in current fiber optic systems. Different wavelength ranges correspond to different colors of light transmitted through the optical fiber.
According to the research team, the data transmission speed can reach such a high figure thanks to a newly developed optical processing device.
