The heart of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong - a communist soldier, an outstanding leader, intelligent, courageous, a great personality and compassionate - stopped beating at 1:38 PM on July 19, 2024, at the Central Military Hospital 108.
At 80 years old, with nearly 57 years of Party membership, 14 years as General Secretary, over 2 years as President, and over 5 years as Chairman of the National Assembly , Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong has always been deeply concerned and dedicated to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation. Together with the Central Committee of the Party and the Government, he has led the entire Party, people, and army to achieve many great achievements of historical significance.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was born on April 14, 1944, in Dong Hoi commune, Dong Anh district, Hanoi city.
Admitted to the Party on December 19, 1967, at the age of 23 and in his fourth year of studying Literature at Hanoi University, Party member Nguyen Phu Trong has since been highly conscious of self-cultivation and training with a beautiful and unwavering orientation, as the General Secretary has often mentioned in a song and poem: "If you are a flower, be a sunflower; if you are a bird, be a white dove; if you are a stone, be a diamond; if you are a person, be a communist" and "As long as there is one second, one minute of breath left; the fight will continue without ceasing!".
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has made significant contributions to the development of the country.
For nearly 57 years as a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has always been absolutely loyal to the Party, the Fatherland, and the People; in all circumstances, he has always demonstrated the character and wisdom of a staunch communist; steadfastly adhering to Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought, the goal of national independence and socialism; preserving, upholding, and spreading the pure revolutionary moral qualities, pioneering spirit, and exemplary conduct; constantly learning, cultivating, and training himself; being close to the grassroots and the people and comrades.
Having held many important positions entrusted to him by the Party, State, and People, such as: Member of the Central Committee of the Party (from the 7th to the 13th term), Member of the Politburo (from the 8th to the 13th term), General Secretary (from the 11th to the 13th term), President of the Republic for the term 2016 - 2021 (October 2018 to April 2, 2021), Chairman of the National Assembly (11th and 12th terms), Editor-in-Chief of the Communist Magazine, Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong has made many great and important contributions to the revolutionary cause of our Party and nation, especially in the process of renovation, construction, and defense of the Fatherland.
In particular, over the past three terms, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has made significant contributions to the country's development, especially during the period of accelerating industrialization, modernization, international integration, and implementing the strategy for national defense in the new situation.
Comrade Pham Minh Chinh, Member of the Political Bureau and Prime Minister, presented flowers to congratulate General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the ceremony to award the 55-year Party membership badge.
However, as a person who lives simply, humbly, exemplarily, and sincerely, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, in his speech upon receiving the 55-year Party membership badge, still only acknowledged that: "everything I have done is extremely small compared to the Party's contributions in educating and training me; the guidance and instruction of senior Party members; the cooperation and assistance of comrades and colleagues; the encouragement and support of the people, and directly from the agencies where I studied, worked, and served."
For his immense and exceptionally outstanding contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation, the Party and State of Vietnam have awarded him the Gold Star Order - the highest honor of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
As General Secretary, Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong clearly demonstrated his pivotal leadership role, working with the Central Committee, the Politburo, and the Secretariat to build unity and consensus in will and action within the Party, creating a high level of unity within the political system. He led the entire Party, the people, and the armed forces to overcome difficulties and challenges, achieving many significant accomplishments in various fields, leaving outstanding marks and further enhancing the country's strength, potential, position, and international prestige.
Not only is he a talented leader, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is also an outstanding theorist and scientist.
As the Party's leading theoretical figure, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has made significant contributions to the theoretical field, with his extensive research work "Some Theoretical and Practical Issues on Socialism and the Path to Socialism in Vietnam".
Not only is he a talented leader, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is also an outstanding theorist and scientist.
Through rigorous argumentation, profound analysis, and distillation of rich practical experience, Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong summarized the history of contemporary world development as well as the practical experience of the Vietnamese revolution, thereby scientifically affirming the only correct path for the country's development – the socialist path. Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong emphasized that the Vietnamese people have undergone a long and arduous revolutionary struggle, full of hardships and sacrifices, against the yoke of colonial and imperialist domination and aggression to protect national independence and the sacred sovereignty of the country, for the freedom and happiness of the people. National independence linked with socialism is the fundamental and consistent guideline of the Party, the principle of success of the Vietnamese revolution, and also a crucial point in Ho Chi Minh's ideological legacy. Advancing towards socialism is an objective requirement, the only necessary and correct path to achieve freedom, prosperity, and happiness for the Vietnamese people.
Besides this major theoretical work, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has also made many contributions in specialized theoretical fields. These include the books: "Resolutely and persistently fighting against corruption and negativity, contributing to building our Party and State to be increasingly clean and strong" (February 2023); "Some issues on military guidelines and national defense strategy in the cause of building and protecting the socialist Fatherland of Vietnam in the new era" (July 2023); "Promoting the tradition of great national unity, building our country to be increasingly prosperous, civilized, and happy" (November 2023); "Building and developing Vietnam's comprehensive, modern foreign relations and diplomacy, imbued with the identity of 'Vietnamese bamboo'" (November 2023); "Building and developing an advanced Vietnamese culture, rich in national identity" (June 2024)...
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong delivered the opening speech at the 8th Conference of the Central Committee of the Party, 13th term.
The books by the General Secretary have received special attention and have been highly appreciated by scholars, researchers both domestically and internationally, and by the Vietnamese people, not only for their ideological value and content, but also, in part, for the author himself – a man of intellect, character, and unwavering commitment to the goals and ideals chosen by the Party, President Ho Chi Minh, and the Vietnamese people.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has always been deeply mindful of President Ho Chi Minh's words: "A nation, a party, and each individual, no matter how great and attractive they were yesterday, will not necessarily be loved and praised by everyone today and tomorrow if their hearts are no longer pure, if they fall into individualism." General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong also understands that the Party must know how to self-correct, how to rely on the people to rectify its shortcomings, and that rectification must start from the top down. Therefore, he directly served as the Commander-in-Chief (Head of the Steering Committee) of the "war" against corruption, with an uncompromising spirit; anyone who does not act or hesitates will be set aside… and this "war" has created strong trust among the people.
As the Head of the Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption and Negative Phenomena, with very high political determination, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has directed the fight against corruption and negative phenomena decisively, persistently, comprehensively, systematically, and in depth, making breakthroughs and linking the fight against corruption and negative phenomena with the building and rectification of the Party and the political system. Many ideas, viewpoints, guiding principles, and action principles in the fight against corruption and negative phenomena initiated and directed by the General Secretary have proven effective, affirmed through practice, and yielded many valuable lessons, both theoretically and practically.
The "furnace" of the people, once lit, not only makes both "dry wood" and "fresh wood" burn, but also serves as a deterrent and a source of reflection for even those whose hands have not yet been stained with corruption.
This "war" is theoretical and systematic. This theory is fundamentally expressed in the work "Resolutely and persistently fighting against corruption and negative phenomena, contributing to building a cleaner and stronger Party and State" (February 2023) by the General Secretary. This war has clear objectives, and the decisive factor is the direct, close, comprehensive, and continuous leadership of the Party; relying on the people and listening to the people. In particular, it is the exemplary and consistent relationship between words and actions, the relentless struggle, and the unity between years of careful planning and concrete actions in the fight against corruption and negative phenomena by the General Secretary. Thanks to this, the work of preventing and combating corruption and negative phenomena has achieved many important results, creating a strong transformation in the awareness and actions of the entire political system, increasing the trust of cadres, Party members, and the people in the Party, the State, and our regime. And the reality proves that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has fulfilled his mission as the head of state in protecting the survival and development of the country through two parallel paths: law and culture. Law represents the strictness and civility of a state and a nation, while culture represents the soul and virtue of a people. The fight against corruption led by the General Secretary demonstrates the strictness of the state, the civilized lifestyle of a nation, and the cultural revival is about building the character and integrity of the people.
In every position he has held, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has always reminded himself to uphold the four virtues of "diligence, frugality, integrity, and righteousness" that President Ho Chi Minh taught during his lifetime; he has gradually matured and dedicated his entire life to the Party and the people.
At the same time, the General Secretary always demanded that each agency, locality, and each official fully and profoundly understand their responsibilities, wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to the common good, and place the interests of the Party, the country, and the people above all else; they must use standards of political qualities, ethics, lifestyle, especially work efficiency, personal and family prestige as the main criteria; they must use these criteria to correctly evaluate officials, select the right people, assign the right tasks, and place them in the right positions, in order to create a cohesive, united, and strong team and collective of collaborators…

The entire nation holds General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in high regard and trust – a true communist, a brilliant leader, who consistently aligns his words with his actions, uses the people as his yardstick and standard, and strives for the people's interests; always close to the people, understanding their needs, and possessing an incredibly compassionate heart.
Acknowledging the immense contributions of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the late General Secretary Le Kha Phieu once affirmed: "He is a true communist, sincere and righteous. His character is kind, but resolute and uncompromising in the rectification of the Party so that our Party becomes increasingly clean, worthy of being 'a servant, a loyal servant of the people' as President Ho Chi Minh once affirmed. I would like to borrow a few lines from the famous work 'How the Steel Was Tempered' by the Soviet writer Nikolai Alekseyevich Ostrovsky to conclude this article and as a tribute to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong – who has made immense and exceptionally outstanding contributions to the revolutionary cause of our Party and nation: 'All my life, all my strength, I have dedicated to the noblest cause in the world – the cause of national liberation, the liberation of humanity, and bringing happiness to the people!'"
